Dan Quinn Sees Two Ways Von Miller Can Help Dallas Cowboys’ Pass Rush

DALLAS — Dan Quinn coached Von Miller for one season in Washington, and the Washington Commanders coach said Monday that Miller can still bend off the edge at 37 and will help the Dallas Cowboys develop their young pass rushers.

Dallas announced Sunday night that it had agreed to terms with Miller. The one-year contract is worth $5.5 million and carries a maximum value of $7.5 million, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. ESPN‘s Adam Schefter first reported the agreement.

Quinn responded to a text message from reporter Ed Werder on Monday morning.

“He is a really cool guy. Has coaching insights to help developing pass rushers. Will be very good for the two young rushers. Still can bend off that edge,” Quinn said.

Miller signed with Washington last offseason on a one-year deal and appeared in all 17 games, starting three. He finished with 9.0 sacks, 26 combined tackles, and six tackles for loss. Washington played him on 420 defensive snaps, 37% of the team’s total. The 9.0 sacks were his most in a season since 2021.

Dan Quinn’s Three Seasons In Dallas

Quinn was the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator from 2021 to 2023. He was named AP Assistant Coach of the Year in 2021, his first season, after taking over a unit that had ranked 28th in points allowed per game the year before.

Across those three years, Dallas ranked fifth in the NFL in points allowed per game at 19.9. The Cowboys were sixth in sacks with 141 and first in interceptions with 59.

Washington hired Quinn as head coach on Feb. 3, 2024. He is in his third season there. The Commanders went 12-5 in his first year.

Quinn is not the only member of the current Cowboys staff with a Miller connection. Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker coached defensive backs in Denver in 2021, Miller’s last season with the Broncos before a midseason trade to the Los Angeles Rams.

Where Von Miller Lands In The Dallas Cowboys Rotation

Miller has 138.5 career sacks, the most among active players. He also has 607 combined tackles, 27 forced fumbles, and 271 quarterback hits in 203 games. He has been to eight Pro Bowls and has been named first-team All-Pro three times.

Rashan Gary leads the Cowboys’ outside linebacker group after arriving from Green Bay this offseason. Donovan Ezeiruaku is entering his second season after Dallas took him 44th overall in 2025, and he had 2.0 sacks and 40 tackles as a rookie. Malachi Lawrence, the 23rd overall pick in April, finished his UCF career with 20 sacks. The room also includes Marist Liufau, Sam Williams, James Houston, and Tyrus Wheat.

Dallas had $18.5 million in cap space before the agreement, per Over the Cap. The team signed defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to a three-year, $105.9 million extension last week.

Miller is expected to arrive in Oxnard, California, on Monday. The Cowboys have two full practices left there before they break camp and travel to Glendale, Arizona, for Saturday’s preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals. Camp practices resume in North Texas next week.
