FRISCO, Texas — Dak Prescott said Thursday that real Dallas Cowboys fans will stick with the team after its 28-20 season-opening loss to the New York Giants.
Dallas went 7-9-1 in 2025 and missed the playoffs for a second straight season. The Cowboys open their home schedule Sunday against Washington at AT&T Stadium.
Everybody is going to have an opinion, good or bad, in Prescott’s experience.
“It’s a long season,” Prescott said. “I love our fans, but I don’t necessarily feel like I need to speak to that fan. Sorry for them. If they’re a real fan, they’ll stick with it. They’ll trust it. They’ll believe in it. And at the end of the day, like we just said, it is one game.”
“And, yeah, it sucks it’s the first game,” Prescott continued. “Nobody’s more pissed than myself and these guys in here. We didn’t want to start 0-1. We’re as excited as any fan out there about the offseason and things we’ve done in the training camp. So turn that energy and come to the game this Sunday and be as loud as you can. And we appreciate it.”
Prescott completed 22-of-34 passes for 175 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception at MetLife Stadium. The interception came just before halftime on a ball he said after the game he was trying to throw away. New York scored six plays later to take a 14-7 lead into the break.
Dak Prescott Says Cowboys Are Doubling Down After Loss
Prescott said the coaches had the right game plan against New York and that Dallas still had chances in a one-possession game.
“Just to stick to it,” Prescott explained. “A lot of times people panic. A lot of times people want to change everything. And for me, it’s about doubling down. It’s about, I know our approach. I know the coaches and everything that we did in that game plan was right.”
“We just didn’t get it done in a tough NFL game and a one-possession game and still had opportunities, right, balls on the ground that didn’t bounce our way,” Prescott added. “So for me, it’s about doubling down, making sure the young guys understand the importance of the details and just the simple fact of believing in ourselves and believing that we can go get the job done with just a little bit extra work going on Monday, extra work on Tuesday, going all the way into Saturday, that when you go out there to play on Sunday, you’re just even more confident because of what you’ve put in.”
Prescott did not answer a follow-up on why a fan should trust the team.
“You’re trying to get me caught up with these fans or something,” Prescott said. “I don’t get it. I just don’t get it. I’m not going there.”
Dallas Cowboys Open Home Schedule Against Washington Commanders
The Washington Commanders are also 0-1 after a 24-22 loss at Philadelphia. Washington finished 5-12 last season.
Dallas swept the 2025 series, winning 44-22 in Arlington in October and 30-23 at Northwest Stadium on Christmas. The Cowboys have won eight of the last 10 meetings.
Kickoff Sunday at AT&T Stadium is set for 3:25 p.m. CT on Fox.
