FRISCO, Texas — Dak Prescott is three touchdown passes from tying Tony Romo’s Dallas Cowboys record and four from owning it outright. Prescott said Thursday that he is humbled to be in that company.
Romo threw 248 touchdown passes over 13 seasons in Dallas before the Cowboys released him in April 2017. Prescott entered 2026 five short of the mark. He threw 2 in the 28-20 loss to the New York Giants on Sept. 13, one to CeeDee Lamb and a 17-yarder to running back Javonte Williams in the fourth quarter.
Dallas took Prescott in the fourth round in 2016, No. 135 overall. He expects to play for a long time.
“Blessed, humbled, thankful to have the opportunity to do so,” Prescott said. “This game has meant so much to me. It’s always been since as long as I can remember. Peace. Getting out there and just playing this game has given me peace and a level of excitement and joy that it’s hard to even put into words.”
“And to now put myself in that category, it’s humbling,” Prescott continued. “But I expect to play for a long time. And yeah, in my mind, I’m just getting started. I’ve said it before, I think records are meant to be broken when you’re playing long enough. And that’s just this opportunity for me to do this.”
On Nov. 23, 2025, Prescott passed Romo’s franchise mark of 34,183 passing yards with a 9-yard completion to George Pickens against the Philadelphia Eagles. He threw 30 touchdown passes last season. It was his fourth season with at least 30, tying Romo’s franchise record.
Dak Prescott On Troy Aikman And Tony Romo
Prescott credits Troy Aikman and Romo with setting the standard he is held accountable to now.
“I appreciate those guys, having a relationship with both of them,” Prescott explained. “And as you said, right, whether it’s playing with Tony for a year or just working with Troy through charity events and just getting to talk to him on production calls. And, yeah, super, super thankful for those guys obviously being there for me if I ever needed them and given and lending a hand and setting a standard.”
“But, and at the end of the day, I thank them for setting that standard,” Prescott added. “That’s made this job that much more fun. It’s made you guys, right, holding me to a standard that I appreciate and makes me be accountable. So yeah, without those guys, there would be no record, and thankful for them putting it there. But, like I said, excited to break it, get past it, and keep building.”
The Cowboys made Aikman the first overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft. He threw for 32,942 yards and 165 touchdowns over 12 seasons and won three Super Bowls. Aikman has been the analyst on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” since 2022.

Prescott threw for 307 yards and 2 touchdowns in the 30-23 win at Washington on Christmas.
The Washington Commanders visit AT&T Stadium on Sunday for the Cowboys’ home opener, with kickoff set for 3:25 p.m. CT on Fox. Dallas then faces the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 27 at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, with kickoff at 3:25 p.m. CT.
