FRISCO, Texas — Von Miller said Thursday that former Washington Commanders teammate Bobby Wagner would be on an NFL roster if he wanted to play this season.
Wagner, 36, remains an unsigned free agent a week into the regular season. He spent the last two seasons with Washington, including 2025, when Miller also played there.
Miller built a lot of amazing bonds with his Washington teammates last season.
“If he wanted to play football, he’d be on the team,” Miller said. “He’s a man of many talents. He went and got his master’s degree during the season last year. If he wanted to be on the team, he would. I think it’s probably something else that he’s doing right now.”
Wagner completed the requirements for an MBA from Howard University during the 2025 season. In February, he was named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year at NFL Honors.
Bobby Wagner Unsigned Since Commanders Let His Contract Expire
Washington signed Wagner to one-year deals in 2024 and 2025. He became an unrestricted free agent in March when the second one expired. In February, Jordan Schultz reported that Wagner fully intended to play in 2026.
The Commanders added linebacker Leo Chenal in free agency and drafted linebacker Sonny Styles in the first round in April. Frankie Luvu remains on the roster.
Wagner started all 17 games for Washington in 2025. He made 162 tackles, fifth in the NFL, with 4.5 sacks and 2 interceptions. He has 2,000 career tackles.
In 2024, his first season in Washington, Wagner made the Pro Bowl and was a second-team All-Pro as the Commanders reached the NFC Championship Game. Seattle drafted him in the second round in 2012 out of Utah State. He spent 10 seasons there, won Super Bowl XLVIII, and was a first-team All-Pro six times. He played for the Los Angeles Rams in 2022 and returned to Seattle in 2023.
Von Miller, Dallas Cowboys Host Washington Commanders
Miller had 9 sacks for Washington last season. He also left in free agency and signed a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys in August.
“I learned from those guys, and I enjoyed my time with them,” Miller said of the Commanders.
Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown strained his hamstring in the Week 1 loss to the New York Giants, and rookie Jaishawn Barham is in line to start in his place. Washington comes to AT&T Stadium on Sunday, with kickoff set for 3:25 p.m. CT on Fox.
