FRISCO, Texas — Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown could be fined by the NFL for hitting New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart after Dart had already run out of bounds Sunday night at MetLife Stadium. The league’s Week 1 fines are due out Saturday.
With 9:38 left in the first quarter, Dart faced second-and-10 at the New York 41-yard line. He scrambled left for 22 yards. Overshown hit him after he crossed the sideline and sent him toward the Giants’ bench. A scuffle followed.
Officials flagged Overshown 15 yards for unnecessary roughness, which moved the ball to the Dallas 22. Cam Skattebo finished the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run.
Dart stayed in the game. He went 23-of-29 for 230 yards and 3 touchdowns and ran 11 times for 54 yards in New York’s 28-20 win.
DeMarvion Overshown’s Fine History And The NFL’s 2026 Fine Schedule
Under the league’s 2026 fine schedule, a first-offense late hit on a quarterback carries an $11,941 fine. If the NFL rules Dart was a defenseless player, the first-offense figure is $17,911. A second late hit costs $17,911, and a second hit on a defenseless player costs $23,882.
Hits on defenseless players are one of five categories in the on-field accountability system the NFL and the NFL Players Association announced in August. The other four are hip-drop tackles, horse-collar tackles, launching, and blindside blocks. Players who commit three offenses in those categories during a season will be suspended for one game, according to the joint statement published by NFL.com. A player with one violation gets 50% of the fine back at the end of the season.
Overshown was one of 14 players The Big Lead’s Dotun Adeduyite listed as facing possible punishment after Week 1. Running back Javonte Williams was another. His touchdown celebration Sunday drew a 15-yard taunting penalty that pushed Brandon Aubrey‘s extra-point try back to 48 yards. Aubrey missed it. A first-offense taunting fine is $11,941.
The NFL fined Overshown once last season. On Nov. 17, with 1:04 left in the second quarter of a Monday night game in Las Vegas, he shoved Raheem Mostert, then a Las Vegas Raiders running back, after Mostert had gone out of bounds on a 4-yard run. Officials did not throw a flag. The league fined Overshown $8,166 for unnecessary roughness that Saturday, Nov. 22.
Dallas won that game 33-16. It was Overshown’s first game of the 2025 season, and the fine is the only one of his career.
DeMarvion Overshown Out Against Washington Commanders With Hamstring Strain
Dallas ruled out Overshown and safety Malik Hooker on Friday for Sunday’s home opener against the Washington Commanders. Neither practiced this week, according to the Cowboys’ final injury report. Hooker has a fractured forearm.
Early in the fourth quarter Sunday, Overshown grabbed his right hamstring after a play and hobbled to the sideline. He finished with 7 tackles. He wore the green dot and played 51 defensive snaps. An MRI on Monday showed a strain, and Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer put the timeline at one to two weeks.
“We’ll see how he does, but nothing long term,” Schottenheimer said Monday.
Rookie Jaishawn Barham, a third-round pick, played 34 defensive snaps in the opener, and Dee Winters played 40. Schottenheimer said Wednesday at The Star that he has zero doubts Barham will play well.
“He’ll be the green dot for us, and again, he’s got great command of what we’re doing,” Schottenheimer said Friday.
Dallas drafted Overshown in the third round, 90th overall, in 2023 out of the Texas Longhorns. He tore the ACL in his left knee in the 2023 preseason and missed his rookie year. In 13 games in 2024, he had 90 tackles and 5 sacks. He also returned an interception 23 yards for a touchdown against the Giants on Thanksgiving.
That December, he tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee. He opened 2025 on the physically unable to perform list and had 28 tackles in 6 games after returning in Las Vegas.
Overshown was a first-team All-Big 12 pick at Texas in 2022, when he set career highs with 96 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 4 sacks. Two years earlier, he skipped the start of Longhorns workouts to help his mother and three siblings in Troup, Texas, unloading trucks at a Brookshire’s grocery store for almost two months at $9.75 an hour, Calvin Watkins reported for The Dallas Morning News in 2023.
In May 2023, Overshown signed a four-year, $5,390,028 rookie contract that included a $920,020 signing bonus, according to Spotrac. His 2026 cap hit is $1,723,169. He is scheduled for unrestricted free agency after the season.
