OXNARD, Calif. — Three Dallas Cowboys returned to practice Thursday, and four more stayed in rehab, coach Brian Schottenheimer said before the team’s third padded practice of training camp.
Left tackle Tyler Guyton, linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, and safety Alijah Clark were back on the field. Safety Jalen Thompson, defensive tackle Jonathan Bullard, defensive back Zion Childress, and cornerback Devin Moore remained out. Tight end Princeton Fant is the only player on the list facing a long absence.
Guyton’s elbow soreness is considered minor. Overshown’s leg soreness is the same, and it kept him out of Tuesday’s practice. Both returned ahead of Friday’s scheduled rest day.
Clark left Tuesday’s practice with an ankle injury and was helped off the field. He didn’t come back that day. His MRI came back clear, and he isn’t expected to miss time.
The Dallas Cowboys Rehab Group
Thompson, Bullard, Childress, and Moore are each dealing with a soft tissue injury. All four sat out Thursday. None is expected to miss significant time, and the Cowboys expect the group back soon.
Thompson is the most consequential name of the four. Dallas signed him in free agency after seven seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, and he arrived as the veteran presence in a rebuilt secondary under new Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker. Thompson has played 99 career games. He has 578 tackles and 9 interceptions.
Bullard came over in the same offseason wave that brought Kenny Clark, Quinnen Williams, and Rashan Gary to the defensive front.
Princeton Fant and the Tight End Room
Fant tore his ACL and partially tore his MCL during the first padded practice on Aug. 3. He’ll be moved to injured reserve and will miss significant time.
Dallas has already responded. The Cowboys claimed tight end Zack Kuntz off waivers this week to restore depth behind Jake Ferguson and Luke Schoonmaker.
Ferguson caught 82 passes for 600 yards across 17 games last season and made his second Pro Bowl as an alternate.
Guyton’s status carries its own weight along an offensive line that already lost center Matt Hennessy for the season to a neck injury. Schottenheimer said this week that Guyton hasn’t been named the starting left tackle, and that Nate Thomas needs to raise his level to make it a competition.
Friday is a rest day. The Cowboys hold a joint practice against the Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday in Woodland Hills, California, and camp in Oxnard closes Aug. 18. Dallas opens the preseason at the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday with kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT on NFL Network.
