FRISCO, Texas — Four Dallas Cowboys defenders were ruled out Thursday for Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens in Rio de Janeiro. Safeties Malik Hooker and P.J. Locke, cornerback Cobie Durant, and linebacker DeMarvion Overshown all carry the designation on the final injury report of the week, which came after Dallas finished its last practice at The Star before flying to Brazil on Thursday night.
None of the four practiced with the team Thursday, according to Tim Cowlishaw of The Dallas Morning News. Overshown worked out on the side with Cowboys director of rehab Britt Brown during what the club regarded as a “normal Friday” practice.
Dallas has two walkthroughs left before kickoff. The first comes Friday after the team lands in Brazil, and the second is scheduled for Saturday inside Maracanã Stadium.
Both teams are 1-1. The same four defenders sat out Wednesday’s practice, when outside linebacker James Houston (shoulder) was a full participant.
Malik Hooker, P.J. Locke, And Cobie Durant Out In The Secondary
Hooker fractured his forearm in the 28-20 loss at the New York Giants on Sept. 13. He left in the third quarter after a collision with a Giants blocker and had surgery two days later. Dallas held him out of last Sunday’s 37-20 win over the Washington Commanders at AT&T Stadium, and Cowlishaw reported that Hooker could return sooner than the other two defensive backs.
Locke started at safety in Hooker’s place against Washington and tore the plantar fascia in his foot on the third play of the game. Markquese Bell took his snaps next to Jalen Thompson. Durant strained his hamstring in the same game, and second-year cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. replaced him.
Durant, Locke, and rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham (stinger) were all hurt against Washington. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer had no timetable for any of the injured players after the game and said they would undergo more tests.
“We did get beat up a little bit, so we’ll figure that stuff out in the morning,” Schottenheimer said. “But yeah, it’s a unique week, but one that we’re looking forward to. We’ll take any test people want to throw at us.”
The team had not decided whether to place Durant or Locke on injured reserve when Schottenheimer met with reporters the next day.
“Both those guys could be a few weeks,” Schottenheimer explained.
By Wednesday, Durant was set to begin on-field rehab and Locke was out of his walking boot, Schottenheimer said. Cowlishaw reported that both are expected to miss multiple games. Revel is expected to make his first start of the season in Durant’s place, and Bell will likely start at safety.
DeMarvion Overshown Out Again, Ravens Monitoring Zay Flowers And Ronnie Stanley
Overshown strained his hamstring in the opener at MetLife Stadium and left in the second half after making 7 tackles. Schottenheimer said the next day that he would miss one to two weeks, and he was inactive against Washington. On Wednesday, Schottenheimer said Overshown was “making good progress” but put a “low probability” on him playing Sunday.
Barham has taken Overshown’s spot at middle linebacker. The third-round pick from Michigan started against Washington, wore the green dot, and forced a fumble that Dee Winters recovered.
Overshown is in the final year of his rookie contract. In 2024, he had 90 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, and 1 interception returned for a touchdown in 13 games. A knee injury limited him to 6 games last season.
Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers (hamstring) and left tackle Ronnie Stanley (toe) missed the start of practice Thursday in Owings Mills, Md., a day after neither practiced, The Baltimore Sun reported. Flowers had 5 catches for 150 yards and 1 touchdown in the 41-23 season-opening win at the Indianapolis Colts before injuring his hamstring. He missed Sunday’s 24-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints, a game Stanley left with the toe injury.
Ravens coach Jesse Minter said Monday he felt Baltimore would have “a good shot with a lot of guys this week.” Reports leading into the game have questioned the field conditions at Maracanã Stadium.
“I think you have to take everything into account, most importantly what is best for [Flowers],” Minter said. “We will figure all these out. I think we have a lot of guys in that day-to-day range right now.”
Dallas visits the Houston Texans on Oct. 4. Kickoff Sunday in Rio de Janeiro is set for 3:25 p.m. CT on CBS, with the Cowboys listed as the home team.
