‘Line Up Anywhere’: CeeDee Lamb Explains What Makes Him Unguardable For Dallas Cowboys

FRISCO, Texas — CeeDee Lamb says his ability to line up anywhere in the Dallas Cowboys offense and run any route on the tree is what makes him unguardable, and he said after Thursday’s practice that he is going to stand on that.
Lamb is in his seventh season since Dallas made him the No. 17 overall pick in 2020. He was a first-team All-Pro in 2023, when he caught 135 passes for 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns, and he caught 5 passes for 74 yards and 2 touchdowns in Monday’s 38-21 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Cowboys offensive coordinator Klayton Adams, speaking with reporters earlier Thursday, described Lamb as having a feel for the game that lets him take an assignment and make it his own rather than simply complete it, according to a reporter who relayed the comment to Lamb in the locker room.
The less control a person has over a situation, the more stressful it gets, in Lamb’s view. He would rather his coaches never have to feel that.
“I’ve always wanted to make [my coaches’] job as easy as possible because I know they’re not out there. The least control that you have on a situation, I feel like it’s the most stressful,” Lamb said. “So, like, when I go out there, I just want them to be like, hey, you go here and be here at this time. That simple. And you just let me do the rest.”
“And that’s always been me because coaches be stressing for no reason, to be honest,” Lamb continued.
What CeeDee Lamb Says Makes Him Unguardable
Lamb’s first answer to the question was aimed at the room. “Hey, y’all, man. That’s the answer,” he said. The second time, he spelled it out.
“I think my ability to line up anywhere in the offense and run any route on the route tree,” Lamb explained. “I feel like I could [beat] anybody in front of me and I’m gonna stand on that.”
Lamb has 7 touchdown catches through seven games this season. He signed a four-year, $136 million extension with Dallas in August 2024.
Lamb On George Pickens Moving Into The Slot
Dallas has also moved George Pickens inside at times. Pickens, playing this season on the franchise tag, has 37 catches for 485 yards and 2 touchdowns, and he caught a 21-yard touchdown pass at Philadelphia.
A new alignment means new assignments for the defense, according to Lamb, and the Cowboys get to see how disciplined a defense really is.
“They’re not used to it. It’s a different picture so it’s like … different alignment, I feel like they have different assignments,” Lamb said. “So we’re just playing with our position and seeing how they’re going to react and we’re going to see how true they are.”
Repeating what works does not worry Lamb, even if opponents start to expect it. He said a play that is consistent enough “will work anyway,” because the offense has “an answer for every coverage,” which leaves “the mercy … in your court” as an offensive player.
Lamb and the Cowboys host the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at AT&T Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon CT on FOX.
