FRISCO, Texas — Von Miller has not played a snap for the Dallas Cowboys, and Dallas has not decided whether he dresses Sunday night at the New York Giants.
Miller agreed to a one-year deal on Aug. 16 after missing the offseason program and all of training camp.
“I think he is. We haven’t finalized that,” Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said. “Today was a bonus Monday, so we’re really just kind of getting them exposed to some of the basic concepts that they do offensively, defensively, and special teams. But in terms of play time and the roster numbers and all those things, we’ll finalize that. But I don’t see any reason from a physical standpoint that Von wouldn’t be ready to play this week. And if he’s one of the guys that makes it, then he will. But we haven’t had those discussions yet.”
Teams may activate 48 players on game day if at least eight of them are offensive linemen, and 47 if fewer. Schottenheimer said Monday that the staff will sort out the eight offensive linemen Dallas carries during the week, and that special teams factors into how the 48 gets built.
Miller’s deal is worth $5.5 million with a maximum value of $7.5 million. He is entering his 15th season and leads all active players with 138.5 career sacks. He had 9 of them for the Washington Commanders in 2025.
Miller grew up in DeSoto and played at Texas A&M. The Denver Broncos took him second overall in 2011. He has 8 Pro Bowl selections and was the Super Bowl 50 MVP. He sat out the 2020 season with an ankle injury and has played for the Broncos, the Los Angeles Rams, the Buffalo Bills, and Washington.
Where Von Miller Fits In The Dallas Cowboys Pass Rush
As much of Miller’s practice time has gone to the Dallas offensive tackles as to the pass rushers, Schottenheimer said on Sept. 1.
No team in the NFL allowed more points than Dallas last season. The Cowboys traded for Quinnen Williams last November, then gave him a three-year, $105.9 million extension on Aug. 10. Williams had 1.5 sacks across his seven games after the trade. His career total is 41.5 sacks in 105 games.
Kenny Clark anchors the interior alongside Williams. Rashan Gary came over from the Green Bay Packers. Donovan Ezeiruaku is in his second season after Dallas took him in the second round in 2025, and first-round rookie Malachi Lawrence is in the rotation.
Christian Parker is in his first season as the Dallas defensive coordinator.
What The Dallas Cowboys Week Looks Like Before The Von Miller Decision
After Monday’s practice the players are off Tuesday. They come back Wednesday for the first- and second-down plan, Schottenheimer said, and then Thursday and Friday.
The Cowboys will be without Tyler Smith. Schottenheimer said Monday that the starting left guard has surgery on his left thumb Tuesday and will likely go on injured reserve with a designation to return, a four-to-six-week absence.
Dallas finished 7-9-1 last season. That made two straight years out of the playoffs. The Giants have a new coaching staff under John Harbaugh, who brought 15 assistants with him from the Baltimore Ravens, and a front that includes Brian Burns, DJ Reader, Shelby Harris, Tremaine Edmunds, and fifth overall pick Arvell Reese.
