ARLINGTON, Texas — The Toronto Blue Jays will throw a bullpen day built around right-hander Spencer Arrighetti against the Texas Rangers in Sunday’s series finale at Globe Life Field, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet reported Saturday. Right-hander Trey Yesavage is scheduled to start Monday at Baltimore in his first major league appearance since knee surgery.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Yesavage could throw 45 to 50 pitches over three innings, Zwelling reported. In a perfect world, Toronto would have right-hander Spencer Miles available to follow him.
On Sunday, Jacob deGrom (11-9, 3.79 ERA) starts for Texas. First pitch is 1:35 p.m. CT on Rangers Sports Network.
On Friday, Zwelling laid out the rest of Toronto’s rotation plan. After Dylan Cease started Friday and José Soriano Saturday, the Blue Jays have Yesavage opening a series against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday. Right-hander Max Scherzer follows Tuesday. Scherzer won the 2023 World Series with Texas.
Spencer Arrighetti Has Faced Texas Rangers Twice This Season
Arrighetti pitched against Texas twice as a member of the Houston Astros, and he won both games. On May 15 at Daikin Park, he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning of a 2-0 win. His line was 7 1/3 innings, 1 hit, 0 earned runs, 4 walks, and 5 strikeouts on 102 pitches. A single with one out in the eighth ended the no-hit bid.
Thirteen days later at Globe Life Field, Arrighetti pitched 6 innings in a 5-1 Houston win. He allowed 1 run on 3 hits, walked 1, and hit 2 batters. The run came on a Josh Jung home run in the second inning.
Houston traded Arrighetti to Toronto on Aug. 3 for outfielder Daulton Varsho. At the time of the trade, he was sidelined with Morton’s neuroma, a nerve condition in his right foot, and he had been out since July 25. He made his Blue Jays debut Aug. 21 against the New York Yankees. Arrighetti went to high school in Katy, and he pitched in college at TCU, Navarro College, and Louisiana.
Through his first four appearances with Toronto, two of them starts, Arrighetti was 0-4 with an 8.04 ERA over 15 2/3 innings. On Sept. 12 against Baltimore, the Blue Jays had him pitch in bulk relief behind Miles, who opened the game.
Trey Yesavage Returns From Left Knee Surgery
Yesavage has not pitched in the majors since Aug. 4 at Houston. He hurt his left knee warming up for an inning in that start and left after 2 innings, MLB.com reported. Toronto placed him on the 15-day injured list the next day, and he had surgery to repair his meniscus.
A week after the injury, Schneider said a meniscus injury can heal quickly depending on how the player responds.
“He’s week to week. We’re not ruling him out for the year,” Schneider said Aug. 11. “In the next couple of weeks, we’ll know. The meniscus is weird. Sometimes, it can be fairly quick depending on how the person responds to it. I don’t want to say I’m ‘very optimistic,’ but I like the fact it’s not the year. We know he’s going to get back to throwing again.”
In a rehab outing for Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, Yesavage recorded 2 outs and allowed 2 runs on 34 pitches. He was scheduled to throw another bullpen session with the Blue Jays in Texas this weekend.
Before the injury, Yesavage was 5-5 with a 3.65 ERA in 18 starts. He had 46 walks and 91 strikeouts over 93 2/3 innings. Toronto drafted him 20th overall in 2024 out of East Carolina, and he made his major league debut Sept. 15, 2025.
Texas beat Toronto 7-1 in Friday’s series opener. Entering Saturday, the Blue Jays were 76-78, 1 game behind the Rangers and 2 games behind the Chicago White Sox for the third and final American League wild card, according to MLB.com’s postseason tracker. The Rangers hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over Toronto.
