‘Extremely Talented’: Texas Rangers Promote Nick Hundley, Hamilton Wise, Mike Parnell In Front Office Reshuffle

ARLINGTON, Texas — Nick Hundley is the Texas Rangers’ new vice president of player development, one of four front office moves president of baseball operations Chris Young announced Monday while speaking with reporters, The Dallas Morning News’ Shawn McFarland reported. Hundley spent the last two seasons as a senior advisor to baseball operations.
Two longtime scouting executives also moved up to vice president. Hamilton Wise, previously senior director of international scouting and development, now leads amateur and international scouting, while Mike Parnell, who ran pro scouting as a senior director, is vice president of pro personnel. Josh Boyd, previously an assistant general manager, is now a senior advisor to the amateur and Pacific Rim departments.
Hundley will be the “top voice” in player development, according to Young. He will oversee the department’s day-to-day work alongside director of player development Josh Bonifay.
Rangers general manager Ross Fenstermaker took over player development in 2021 as vice president and assistant general manager for player development and international operations. He still oversaw the department after Texas promoted him to general manager on Nov. 4, 2024, and Young said Monday’s move frees him to focus on other areas.
Before moving into the senior advisor role, Hundley was a special assistant to Young, his former Padres teammate. Young pointed to the managerial chances Hundley has had while staying with Texas.
“I think Nick is extremely talented,” Young said. “Nick’s had opportunities to manage at the major league level, has remained a Ranger, and I think he will be a great voice in our player development.”
Nick Hundley Stays With Texas Rangers After Two Managerial Searches
Hundley interviewed for the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres managerial jobs last offseason, McFarland reported. In October 2025, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Hundley withdrew from the Giants’ search for family reasons. Two years earlier, he had also declined to interview with San Francisco.
San Francisco went with Tennessee coach Tony Vitello. Hundley later made it to the final round in San Diego before the Padres hired Craig Stammen.
The Padres drafted Hundley in the second round in 2005 out of the University of Arizona, and his first three major league seasons came alongside Young in San Diego. He stayed with the Padres through 2014.
He also caught for the Baltimore Orioles, Colorado Rockies, Giants, and Oakland Athletics in a 12-year major league career. Hundley’s last game was with Oakland against the Rangers on June 8, 2019, at Globe Life Park.
Hundley went to work for Major League Baseball as senior director of baseball operations in early 2020, and he and Young worked together at MLB that year. The Rangers hired him on Feb. 7, 2022, as special assistant to Young, who was then the general manager. Young told Jeff Wilson at the time that the job would let Hundley keep learning while giving the front office ideas from his playing career.
“It’s a great opportunity for Nick [to] continue to learn and develop and also contribute and give us suggestions, ideas and, and thoughts regarding the organization based on his experience,” Young explained in 2022.
Hamilton Wise, Mike Parnell, Josh Boyd Move Into New Texas Rangers Roles
Francys Romero of Béisbol FR first reported in October that Texas had promoted Wise to a vice president role, citing sources. Romero also reported that other teams had pursued Wise and other Rangers scouts.
Wise joined the Rangers in 2016. As director of international scouting and development, he oversaw the club’s amateur scouting outside the United States, principally in Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia, according to a Tulane University Law School biography. He also ran Texas’ international player development, based out of the club’s academy in the Dominican Republic. Wise earned an economics degree from Northwestern University, where he was a four-year varsity baseball letter winner, and he holds a law degree and an MBA from Tulane.
Parnell joined the Rangers in 2014. He spent two seasons as assistant director of professional scouting before Texas promoted him to director of professional scouting on Sept. 10, 2021.
Boyd joined the Rangers in 2008 as assistant director of pro scouting. Texas named him assistant general manager in November 2016, and in September 2021 he became vice president and assistant general manager for scouting, overseeing the professional, amateur, and Pacific Rim scouting departments.
Then-president of baseball operations and general manager Jon Daniels announced Boyd’s first promotion to assistant general manager alongside Mike Daly and Jayce Tingler. Daniels credited the three for more than a decade of work with the club.
“These promotions to assistant general manager reflect the outstanding contributions that Josh, Mike, and Jayce have made to our success over a decade plus,” Daniels said at the time.
Fenstermaker came up through the same scouting side of the organization. After joining Texas as a baseball operations intern in 2010, he spent six seasons as a professional scout and one as an international crosschecker, then was director of pro scouting from 2018 to 2019 and senior director of pro and international scouting from 2020 to 2021.
On the coaching staff, hitting coach Alex Cintrón will move into a different role with the organization, and assistant pitching coach Dave Bush will not return. Texas went 80-82 this season and missed the postseason for a third straight year.
