CROMVOIRT, Netherlands — Angel Yin will sit out the opening session of the Solheim Cup on Friday morning. U.S. captain Angela Stanford did not include Yin in her four foursomes pairings, which were announced Thursday at the opening ceremony at Bernardus Golf.
The lineup came a day after Yin said she was ready to play. She missed two months with stomach issues this summer and returned at the FM Championship two weeks ago, where she shot 81-76 and missed the cut.
Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz will lead off the session against Europe’s Charley Hull and Lottie Woad at 12:40 a.m. CT. Alison Lee and Lauren Coughlin, Andrea Lee and Lindy Duncan, and Rose Zhang and Jennifer Kupcho fill out the other three U.S. pairs, GOLF.com reported. Megan Khang, Yealimi Noh, and Auston Kim also sit out the morning session.
Stanford said Thursday her pairings were “just about how we’ve played the golf course and how our players fit the golf course,” according to Australian Golf Digest.
Yin met with reporters Wednesday at Bernardus, in an availability reported by The Associated Press and GOLF.com. She called the Solheim Cup the biggest event in women’s golf and said she had tried everything she could to be ready for its 20th edition.
“I wanted to be honest because I would never jeopardize America,” Yin said. “So I had honest talks with myself in the mirror and with my team, and obviously with Angela because she’s the only other person, other than my family, that I’ve updated throughout all of this.”
“And she wanted me here,” Yin continued. “Because we asked her … well, I didn’t ask her, I had my caddie ask her, ‘Do you want me here?’ And if she said no, I wouldn’t be here. But she said yes. So I think with belief like that and confidence from her to back me, why wouldn’t I show up?”
Angel Yin Lost 35 Pounds During Two-Month Absence
Yin began having stomach pain and nausea during the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in the last week of June. She pulled out of the tournament and spent six days in the hospital, Golf Channel reported.
She has not disclosed a diagnosis. Yin lost 35 pounds during the illness and had to request uniforms in different sizes. She missed the year’s last two majors.
At TPC Boston, she finished last in the field. Yin said Wednesday the week concerned her.
“It’s not a score you really bring out and you go, ‘Wow, that’s the person that’s going to be helping America bring home the cup,’” Yin said.
Yin, 27, is from Arcadia, California, and is No. 25 in the world. She qualified automatically for her fourth Solheim Cup by finishing second on the U.S. points list behind Korda.
Across the 2017, 2019, and 2023 matches, she went 5-3-1. Yin was a captain’s pick in 2017 and 2023 and qualified through the world ranking in 2019, according to Golf Digest. She won the 2025 Honda LPGA Thailand at 28-under 260 for her second LPGA Tour title.
Lilia Vu Travels With U.S. Team As Alternate
Former world No. 1 Lilia Vu is on site at Bernardus as the Americans’ alternate in case Yin cannot play. Yin beat Vu in a playoff for her first LPGA Tour win at the 2023 Buick LPGA Shanghai.
Vu earned the clinching half-point for the U.S. at the 2024 Solheim Cup in Virginia. She has since slipped to No. 235 in the world.
Under the captains’ agreement, every player must play at least once before Sunday singles, Stanford said Tuesday, according to Golf Channel.
“Well, she’s here,” Stanford said. “She’s playing. She’s played two practice rounds … We’re still trying to gauge and we’re watching, but she’s here. She’s very happy to be here, and she’s playing.”
On Wednesday, Yin was out earlier than the rest of the U.S. team, looking for what she called “more practice repetition.”
“I just need to wait for her call,” Yin said, “and whatever she does and whatever she says will, in my opinion, be the best decision because we trust her, and she’s been leading us great.”
The Americans have not won the Solheim Cup in Europe since 2015. Four-ball pairings for Friday afternoon had not been announced as of Thursday. Golf Channel’s coverage begins at 12:30 a.m. CT Friday.
