FRISCO, Texas — Stephen Jones said Monday the Dallas Cowboys set unrealistic expectations for a defense breaking in a new coordinator and a largely rebuilt front seven.
“We felt really good and still do about our football team,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan‘s “K&C Masterpiece” during his weekly Monday appearance. “We just probably had a little unrealistic expectations in terms of what we could do, especially on the defensive side of the ball with all the new faces and a brand-new coordinator, third one and really, I guess, fourth one in four years. But, you know, unfortunately, we just didn’t get the job done.”
Christian Parker is the fourth man to call the Dallas defense since 2021. Dan Quinn, Mike Zimmer, and Matt Eberflus came before him. Parker was hired in the offseason after the Cowboys allowed 511 points and finished last in the NFL in scoring defense at 30.1 points per game.
“We probably jumped the gun a little bit on defense,” Jones said. “I mean, it does take time. Christian Parker is a young coordinator in this league. He’s teaching our guys a bunch of new faces, a new system, and I do think they’re straight up.”
The New York Giants gained 394 total yards in Sunday night’s 28-20 win. New York converted 9 of 11 third downs.
“I think we’ve got a lot of good personnel on that side of the ball,” Jones said. “It’s just, you know, executing at a high level and continue to get the ball out. Some of those balls are going to bounce into our hands and can be the difference in winning the football game, but it’s a great group of men, I think, that want to be great.”

“I think we did get the ball out good,” Jones said. “Unfortunately, the ball didn’t bounce our way when it was on the ground. They had some fortuitous bounces that you need when you’re playing on the road like that. You end a couple drives like that, and it’s a different ball game.”
Jones continued: “Am I convinced we can do that? Absolutely, I’m convinced we can do it. We’re going to learn from this. We’ll look at the tape, obviously. What I’m going off of right now is what we saw last night. Team traveled all night. The coaches will be looking at the tape today.”
How The Dallas Cowboys Rebuilt The Front
Dallas acquired Quinnen Williams from the Jets during the 2025 season. Kenny Clark came over in the trade that sent Micah Parsons to Green Bay, Rashan Gary in a March deal with the same team. Von Miller signed in free agency. With the No. 11 overall pick, Dallas took safety Caleb Downs.
That group produced 2 sacks and 6 quarterback hits against the Giants.
“But we just didn’t make the plays that we needed to make to get them off the field,” Jones said. “And we have to do that in the future.”
Jones added: “And I know they’re going to go back to work, bring their lunch pail and get after it and chop wood and just feel like this group will do what it takes to have a really good football team.”
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer backed Parker after the game. Quinnen Williams called on the unit to look in the mirror.
Dallas hosts the Washington Commanders on Sunday at AT&T Stadium. Kickoff is 3:25 p.m. CT on FOX.
