SAN FRANCISCO — At Golden State Warriors media day on Monday, Stephen Curry opened up about signing a two-year, $116 million extension with the Dubs.
Curry plans to follow Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki by playing for only one NBA team.
“This is home,” Curry said. “This is what we’ve built. This is a community that I’ve played in front of my entire career. Being able to finish the story the right way is a big part of what I can control.”
Curry was eligible for a two-year, $136.7 million extension. He took a pay cut to give the Warriors financial flexibility.
“We’re all smart people in this room,” Curry said. “So you can kind of read the tea leaves on why it’s designed the way that it is.”
Curry Played In Just 43 Games Last Season
Curry dealt with patellofemoral pain syndrome, also known as “runner’s knee,” last season. The future Hall of Famer played in just 43 games.
The Warriors missed the playoffs last season. They haven’t advanced past the second round of the playoffs since 2022.
Curry averaged 26.6 points and 4.7 assists per game while shooting 46.8% from the field, 39.3% from beyond the arc and 92.3% from the free-throw line. Golden State went 37-45.
Curry and Co. beat the LA Clippers in the 9-10 play-in game but lost to the Phoenix Suns in the 7-10 play-in game.
“I’m not fast-forwarding to February,” Curry said. “I’m not fast-forwarding to next offseason. None of that. It’s start Game 1, try to win. If we’re competitive and doing what we’re supposed to do, then that’s information learned on how we need to get better.”
Warriors Had Tough Summer
The Warriors wanted to sign NBA icon LeBron James, but he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers despite Curry and Draymond Green heavily recruiting him.
Golden State was also interested in trading for two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, but the Milwaukee Bucks traded him to the Miami Heat.
The Warriors added Brandon Williams, Georges Niang and Yaxel Lendeborg this offseason, but Jimmy Butler is expected to miss most of this season recovering from his ACL tear, so Golden State likely won’t be a championship contender.
“If it’s the alternative [and we aren’t competitive], then you make decisions based off of that, too,” Curry said. “I think for me [the contract decision] is how I’ve approached every opportunity in my career. You can’t fast-forward your mind, or else you’re not going to be to do your job as a player to try to win.”
Curry Is A Basketball Legend
A top-75 player of all time, Curry will make $62.6 million this season. The four-time NBA champion has career averages of 24.8 points and 6.3 assists per game in the regular season and 26.8 points and 6.1 assists per game in the playoffs.
He’s won two MVPs, one Finals MVP and two scoring titles with the Warriors.
Curry turns 39 on March 14, 2027. He’s been in the NBA since 2009. The 12-time All-Star has made the most 3-pointers in NBA history.
“There’s a pride of representing the Bay,” Curry said. “Representing this franchise that when I stepped foot here in 2009 and what we’ve all been able to accomplish — this isn’t just a me thing, this is a we — I want to do right by that. It’s always been an importance for me, and going into this contract decision, that was front of mind.”
The Warriors open this season on the road against the Los Angeles Lakers.
