Trading Derrick Henry Could Jeopardize Baltimore Ravens’ Future With Lamar Jackson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Trading Derrick Henry could jeopardize the Baltimore Ravens’ long-term relationship with quarterback Lamar Jackson, The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones reported Saturday, and he does not expect Baltimore to deal the running back before Tuesday’s deadline.
Jones wrote that he has no reason to believe Jackson will not be back with the Ravens next year. In a Sept. 12 column, he reported there was no animosity between the sides after a contract deal did not get done before the season, and that both parties intended to keep working together for years.
Lamar Jackson Sidelined For Much Of 2026
Jackson has had two injuries that will force him to miss the majority of the season, and it is possible he will not play again this year, Jones reported. Jackson (right thumb) and backup Tyler Huntley (right toe) were both hurt in the Nov. 1 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Jackson played one of the Ravens’ 51 offensive snaps in that game and was still credited with the loss. Undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano started Thursday’s 33-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Baltimore traded for Jacoby Brissett on Friday.
Jones wrote that one of the quickest ways to push Jackson out the door would be to trade one of the greatest runners of his generation. Jackson also holds considerable contract leverage next offseason if he chooses to use it, according to Jones.
Ravens Already Told Derrick Henry He Is Staying
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Saturday that the Ravens are not expected to trade Henry and recently told him so. Henry has 689 rushing yards and 9 total touchdowns this season and is under contract through 2027.
After Thursday’s loss, Henry wanted the Ravens focused on getting back to work.
“I’m not mentioning me going anywhere else,” Henry said. “I’m saying let’s go back to work, try to get better and turn this around.”
Henry moved into seventh place on the NFL’s all-time rushing list Thursday with 13,707 career yards. Baltimore (4-5) has lost four straight and hosts the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football on Nov. 16.
