ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers recalled catcher Logan O’Hoppe from Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday and designated outfielder Jarred Kelenic for assignment.
O’Hoppe is in the lineup for Sunday’s series finale as the designated hitter, batting seventh. It is his Rangers debut, and it comes against the Los Angeles Angels, the team that traded him last month.
Texas now has 38 players on its major league roster.
Logan O’Hoppe’s Path From The Angels To Texas
The Rangers acquired O’Hoppe and right-hander Chase Silseth from the Angels on July 29 in exchange for minor league infielder Angel Arredondo.
Texas optioned O’Hoppe to Round Rock immediately after the trade and cleared 40-man roster space by transferring Danny Jansen and Jose Corniell to the 60-day injured list.
O’Hoppe hit .209 with a .271 on-base percentage and a .295 slugging percentage in 75 games with the Angels this season, with 4 home runs and 23 RBIs across 256 plate appearances.
He hit .244 with a .303 on-base percentage and a .409 slugging percentage in 2024, with 20 home runs. He hit 19 home runs in 2025 across 119 games.
At Round Rock, O’Hoppe was hitting .300 with a .395 on-base percentage and a .571 slugging percentage entering Saturday, with 3 home runs and 20 RBIs.
“We are very thin at catching right now with Danny Jansen and Kyle Higashioka both on the IL,” president of baseball operations Chris Young said when the trade was announced. “Elias Díaz and Austin Wynns have done a tremendous job, but we felt like this was a trade that not only addresses the needs of the team right now, but it also addresses the needs of the team into the future.”
O’Hoppe is 26 and is making $2.63 million this season. The Philadelphia Phillies drafted him in the 23rd round in 2018, and the Angels acquired him in 2022 in the trade that sent Brandon Marsh to Philadelphia.
Díaz starts at catcher for Texas on Sunday.
Jarred Kelenic Designated For Assignment
Kelenic had his contract selected from Round Rock on Aug. 11, when Texas designated infielder Jonah Bride for assignment.
He hit .213 with a .304 on-base percentage and a .295 slugging percentage in 26 games between the Chicago White Sox and the Rangers this season. Kelenic had 1 home run and 4 RBIs in 69 plate appearances.
At Round Rock he hit .310 with a .408 on-base percentage and a .584 slugging percentage.
Kelenic is a career .211 hitter with a .283 on-base percentage and a .372 slugging percentage. He has 50 home runs and a 30.8% strikeout rate across 1,557 major league plate appearances.
The New York Mets drafted Kelenic sixth overall in 2018 out of Waukesha West High School in Wisconsin. He has played for the Seattle Mariners, the Atlanta Braves, the White Sox, and Texas.
Kelenic is 27 and has exhausted his option years, which is why each roster change has required a designation.
What’s Next For The Texas Rangers
Jake Burger is in the lineup at first base after leaving Saturday’s 3-0 loss with a left wrist contusion.
Cal Quantrill starts Sunday’s finale at 1:35 p.m. CT at Globe Life Field.
The Rangers are 64-66 with 32 games left. Texas opens a three-game series at the White Sox on Monday.
