DALLAS — Despite a significant organizational reset for the Dallas Mavericks, team president Masai Ujiri made one thing clear during a media availability on Wednesday: Kyrie Irving remains a key part of the franchise’s future.
Following the organization’s decision to move on from head coach Jason Kidd, Ujiri repeatedly emphasized that the Mavericks’ long-term vision is centered on No. 1 overall draft pick and Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg.
But while Flagg may represent the future, Ujiri suggested that Irving remains vital to helping the Mavericks reach it.
“Kevin Durant once told me that there’s only one Kyrie walking around in the world,” Ujiri said. “I think we have to figure out a way how Kyrie fits with our program, and I’ve had those conversations.”
Ujiri added that discussions with Irving continued “up until yesterday,” signaling consistent communication between the organization and the nine-time All-Star throughout the transition process.
“I think Kyrie will fit,” Ujiri said. “There’s a huge curiosity to see how Kyrie fits playing with Cooper Flagg. He’s just an incredibly talented player and I think we owe this organization that.”

Although Kidd’s dismissal marks a major shift for the Mavericks, Ujiri rejected the idea that the decision reflected dissatisfaction with Kidd’s relationship with Irving or any of the team’s core players.
“These guys have incredible relationships with Jason Kidd,” Ujiri said. “They’ve communicated very, very well with him. They’ve communicated very, very well with me.”
Ujiri also clarified that Irving and Flagg were consulted during the process, though he took full responsibility for the decision to move on from Kidd.
“This decision is solely here and I take responsibility for it,” Ujiri said. “I don’t want to put that on any player.”

The Mavericks now enter a critical offseason filled with uncertainty, headlined by an ongoing head-coaching search and front-office restructuring. Throughout Wednesday’s press conference, Ujiri repeatedly emphasized organizational alignment and a long-term vision as priorities, and seemed hopeful and positive about the franchise’s future.
That philosophy appears likely to shape both the Mavericks’ coaching search and Irving’s future with the organization.
Ujiri described the upcoming coaching search as “comprehensive” and stressed the importance of leadership, creativity and player relationships when identifying Kidd’s replacement.
“(We’re looking for) all the things you want in a head coach,” Ujiri said. “Leadership, vision, creativity, working with people. We want incredible philosophy, coaching style, how you relate to all our players.”
As the Mavericks move into a new era, Irving appears positioned to remain one of the franchise’s foundational pieces, both as a veteran leader and as a key part of Dallas’ effort to build a championship-contending roster around its emerging young star.
