‘Yes, Yes, It Is’: Jerry Jones Says Dallas Cowboys Would Buy At Trade Deadline, Explains ‘Rent-A-Player’ Math

FRISCO, Texas — With the Nov. 10 NFL trade deadline a week away, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Tuesday that a shot at the NFC East is worth buying for. Jones spoke on 105.3 The Fan’s “Shan & RJ”, two days after a 33-30 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals dropped Dallas to 3-5.
The New York Giants lead the division at 4-2-1, and Dallas is second. Jones said everything depends on the deal.
“Yes, yes, it is. And of course, everything, everything depends upon the deal,” Jones said.
Jerry Jones Explains ‘Rent-A-Player’ Trade Math
Jones laid out how a trade for a player in the last year of his contract can pay back. If the player leaves in free agency, the NFL’s system can return a draft pick.
“And what you have is when you make a trade and you give a draft pick, for instance, for a player like that, then if that player is on your team and then he goes into free agency the next year, it’s called rent-a-player, and he goes into free agency the next year, the system is you get a draft pick back,” Jones explained. “So if you gave, for instance, you gave a third for a player, you might get a fourth back. If his contract is up the next year in this case, then you’ve rented a player for going from a third to a fourth.”
“That’s one of the reasons why you keep your eyes open,” Jones continued. “That might could help us, but at this particular time, I don’t see anything.”
Dallas has already added edge rusher Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers in March and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 1. Selling isn’t part of the plan, according to Jones.
“No, no. We like what we put together for now and a unique situation for each player for the future,” Jones said. “I’m really pleased with what we’ve done, progress we’ve done.”
Jones Calls Loss To Arizona Cardinals ‘Very Painful’
The Cowboys led 24-10 with 14:20 left Sunday and lost in overtime. Jones said the loss set the team back psychologically.
“That was a hurtful loss that we had Sunday, and it’s painful. It’s very painful,” Jones added. “Winning gives your team a better chance to go to another level psychologically. Winning is important. Losing is bad psychologically. So that was a setback out there. Make no mistake about it.”
Dallas visits the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Nov. 8, at Lucas Oil Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon CT on FOX.
