FRISCO, Texas — Jake Ferguson expects every opponent to give the Dallas Cowboys its best. The tight end said Wednesday at The Star that facing a second straight new defensive coordinator will not change how Dallas approaches Sunday.
The Washington Commanders hired Daronte Jones as defensive coordinator this offseason. Ferguson said the focus is on the Dallas game plan rather than wondering whether Washington will throw the kitchen sink at the Cowboys.
“I think it’s less of, oh, wow, they’re going to do something crazy and more of, hey, this is our game plan. This is what we’re going to do. And this is how we’re going to do it. And executing it at the best level it can be executed at,” Ferguson said. “And I think that’s the major focus that we need to focus on, and less of, hey, are they going to throw the kitchen sink at us or what are they going to do.”
“We’re going to get everybody’s best. We’re the Dallas Cowboys. That’s just the way it is. That’s the way it has been. It’s always going to be that way,” Ferguson continued. “So we just got to be clean on what we do.”

The New York Giants beat Dallas 28-20 on Sunday night. Ferguson played 44 of 58 offensive snaps and caught 2 passes for 6 yards.
The Cowboys went over the tape Monday and Tuesday, Ferguson said, and came in Wednesday to clean it up.
“It’s never easy losing. It’s not something we want to do. It leaves a sour taste in your mouth,” Ferguson explained. “But yeah, I think you can’t look back, you can’t dwell. All you can do is look back at it and get better and go over that tape like we did on Monday and Tuesday and then come in here Wednesday and just clean everything up.”
Ferguson had 600 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns in 2025. Dallas restructured his contract before this season.
Jake Ferguson On Dallas Cowboys Getting Off To A Fast Start
Dallas went three-and-out on its first drive at MetLife Stadium. A faster start begins with the week of preparation, Ferguson said.
“I think it starts this week. It started watching the tape from last game, cleaning that up, getting in here today, being clean with our meetings, being clean with our practice, coming into the post-practice meetings, watching those, and then just keep building every single day,” Ferguson said. “So when we do get there on Sunday, we don’t have any questions, we don’t have any sort of hesitation. It’s just, hey, we’re ready to play, we’re free, and we can fly around and play.”
Tight ends Brevyn Spann-Ford and Luke Schoonmaker each played 13 offensive snaps Sunday. Spann-Ford caught 2 passes for 14 yards, and Schoonmaker caught 1 for 12.
Dallas hosts Washington on Sunday at AT&T Stadium. Kickoff is 3:25 p.m. CT on FOX.
