If an NBA team can’t identify its most important player, it has a problem. That team won’t have a clear understanding of how it’s shaping its roster moving forward. Luckily, that’s not an issue for the Dallas Mavericks.
Cooper Flagg is the team’s North Star. Every roster decision the Mavericks make should be in service of maximizing his strengths. Since Flagg is only 19, that means adding younger players who can complement him and develop on his timeline.
That might mean moving veteran players. For example, Daniel Gafford is a veteran who could certainly help teams with more immediate aspirations.
A recent ESPN trade proposal has him heading to the Los Angeles Lakers.

We gave their recent Kyrie Irving suggestion an A. This deal will get a comparable grade. It simply makes sense from the Mavericks’ perspective.
Why The 2026 First-Round Pick Anchors The Dallas Mavericks Return
The most important asset here is arguably that first-round pick. Picks in that range don’t tend to yield rotation players, but they certainly can. If the Mavericks choose well, they could add a key reserve, or even a future starter, who complements Flagg.
That said, Dallas is already adding a young player whose skill set should mesh with its franchise player. Dalton Knecht was an older rookie in 2024-25, but he’s still just 25. His sophomore year was a struggle, but as a rookie, the 6-foot-6 off-guard averaged 9.1 points per game while shooting 37.6% from deep. Knecht can space the floor for Flagg and also serves as a shot creator when his number is called.
Jarred Vanderbilt Fits The Dallas Mavericks Defensive Profile
Jarred Vanderbilt is a veteran that Dallas may look to shop at the deadline. He’s a versatile defender and a strong rebounder. Vanderbilt fits Masai Ujiri‘s preference for long, versatile athletes, so it will be interesting to see whether he stays in the Lone Star State. Either way, bringing him on makes sense.
Gafford is an ideal rim-running, rim-protecting big man. He’s a good player, but he makes more sense on a contender. Dallas needs to prioritize the future. Given Gafford’s injury history, this is about as much future-focused value as the Mavericks are likely to extract from him.
As for ESPN, the proposal earns another A on our end.
