ARLINGTON, Texas — Dak Prescott holds the Dallas Cowboys record for career touchdown passes. His 249th came on a fourth-quarter throw to CeeDee Lamb on Sunday at AT&T Stadium. That is one more than Tony Romo threw in 13 seasons with the franchise.
Prescott threw four touchdown passes in a 37-20 win over the Washington Commanders. Dallas is 1-1 after losing 28-20 to the New York Giants on Sept. 13. Washington fell to 0-2.
In an on-field interview with FOX after the game, Prescott said he always thought Sunday was possible. He credited his teammates and his faith.
“Just a lot of belief in myself, the people around me,” Prescott said.
Washington was also the opponent 10 years ago for Prescott’s first NFL touchdown, a 6-yard run, in his first career win, 27-23 on Sept. 18, 2016.
“And to break the record against them here in Dallas, though, I’m so grateful,” Prescott added. “I couldn’t have done it without so, so many people. Obviously, my team, my Lord [and Savior]. I’m just blessed. Just getting started.”
The first touchdown pass Sunday went 3 yards to Lamb and capped a 10-play, 66-yard opening drive. Jake Ferguson caught the next two, from 10 yards out in the second quarter and from 12 yards out late in the third. The 12-yarder tied Romo at 248. Dallas led 27-13 after it.
On his first play back from the injury tent, Jaishawn Barham forced the fumble that set up the tying score. Dee Winters recovered it at the Washington 13-yard line.
Prescott entered Sunday with 245 touchdown passes. He started the season five short of Romo and threw two in the loss at MetLife Stadium. With the record, he holds the franchise marks for passing yards, touchdown passes, completions, pass attempts, and completion percentage. He came into the game with 36,164 career passing yards.
Dak Prescott Needed CeeDee Lamb’s Help On The Record Throw
The record came one quarter after the tie, on Prescott’s second touchdown pass of the day to Lamb. Prescott was trying not to overthrow him.
“It was one-on-one,” Prescott explained. “I just didn’t wanna overthrow him. It wasn’t a great throw, but I’m like, CeeDee, just help me out. Let’s get this thing over with so we can just stack after that. And CeeDee won, and that’s what CeeDee did.”
Romo threw 248 touchdown passes for Dallas before the Cowboys released him in April 2017. Prescott, a fourth-round pick in 2016 at No. 135 overall, took over as the starter that rookie season after Romo was injured in a preseason game. Prescott is 33 and in his 11th season, all with Dallas.
Three touchdown passes short of tying Romo on Thursday at The Star in Frisco, Prescott said the game has given him peace for as long as he can remember.
“Blessed, humbled, thankful to have the opportunity to do so,” Prescott said. “This game has meant so much to me. It’s always been since as long as I can remember. Peace. Getting out there and just playing this game has given me peace and a level of excitement and joy that it’s hard to even put into words.”
“And to now put myself in that category, it’s humbling,” Prescott continued. “But I expect to play for a long time. And yeah, in my mind, I’m just getting started. I’ve said it before, I think records are meant to be broken when you’re playing long enough. And that’s just this opportunity for me to do this.”
On Nov. 23, 2025, Prescott passed Romo’s franchise mark of 34,183 passing yards with a 9-yard completion to George Pickens against the Philadelphia Eagles. He threw 30 touchdown passes last season. It was his fourth season with at least 30, tying Romo’s franchise record.

Washington played the second half without Jayden Daniels. He was hurt on the final play of the first half. The Commanders ruled him out early in the third quarter with an elbow injury. Marcus Mariota played quarterback the rest of the way.
Prescott brought up Daniels first while discussing the win with FOX.
“Obviously, prayers with him, and wishing him a speedy recovery,” Prescott said. “But we needed this win for our confidence. Obviously, we’re getting out of the country next week to go play the Ravens. And so this was good just to get back to get our first win of the season, get 1-1 in the division, and now we can do it from here.”
Regular-season wins are the only major category left in which Prescott does not hold the franchise record, according to The Associated Press. He entered Sunday with 83. Roger Staubach won 85 games, and Troy Aikman won 94.
Sunday’s win was Prescott’s 84th. It also extended his home winning streak against NFC East opponents to 20 games.
The Cowboys face the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 27 at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Dallas is the designated home team for the NFL’s first regular-season game in the city. Baltimore beat Dallas 28-25 when the teams last met, in Week 3 of the 2024 season. Kickoff is set for 3:25 p.m. CT on CBS.
