FRISCO, Texas — Dak Prescott said Thursday that running back Javonte Williams did not need to apologize to the Dallas Cowboys for the taunting penalty he drew in their 28-20 loss to the New York Giants.
Williams caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Prescott in the fourth quarter at MetLife Stadium on Sept. 13 and was flagged for taunting on the play. The penalty pushed Brandon Aubrey’s extra-point try back to 48 yards. Aubrey missed it, leaving Dallas behind 28-20. Williams later apologized to the team.
Prescott said the penalty was out of character for Williams.
“Being the guy that Javonte is, no, absolutely not. He didn’t need to do that,” Prescott said. “That was uncharacteristic, to be honest with you. But I think that’s why he felt the need to apologize, because that’s not something that anybody expected from Javonte and won’t expect it again.”
“I know he knows it didn’t put the team in the best situation, right?” Prescott continued. “Could have hurt us going forward in that game if we get another chance, right? And so, yeah, he’s a hell of a guy, a hell of a teammate, though. There’s nobody that we trust more than him.”
Williams ran 12 times for 41 yards and a touchdown against New York. He also caught all 5 of his targets for 31 yards and a touchdown.
Dak Prescott On George Pickens After Week 1 Drop
George Pickens caught 3 passes for 28 yards on 6 targets against the Giants. His second season in Dallas started with a drop.
Prescott said he knew Pickens’ mindset from the way the receiver came into the building Monday and Tuesday.
“It’s easy,” Prescott explained. “That’s a guy that takes a lot of pride in his job and is as pissed off as anybody could be. Yeah, I’ve heard he kind of limited the noise, which I think is beautiful. But he’s not a guy that you need extra to get going.”
“Whether it was after the drop or after the game, the way that he came in here on Monday or, yeah, Tuesday, I knew his mindset and his mentality coming back, and it should be a great one for him,” Prescott added.
CeeDee Lamb caught 5 passes for 44 yards and a touchdown in the opener. Prescott finished 22-of-34 for 175 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception.
Dallas Cowboys Host Washington Commanders In Home Opener
In the 30-23 win at Washington on Christmas, Williams finished a 17-play drive with a touchdown run. Dallas converted all 6 of its fourth-down tries in that game.
The Washington Commanders are 0-1 after a 24-22 loss at Philadelphia. Kickoff Sunday at AT&T Stadium is set for 3:25 p.m. CT on Fox.
