EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The Dallas Cowboys took possession at their own 16 with 1:50 left in the first half of Sunday night’s 28-20 loss, tied 7-7, having just forced their first turnover of the season. Sixty-one seconds and six plays later, the New York Giants had the ball at midfield and were 29 seconds from a touchdown.
“We get a turnover pretty much right there in the red zone. We’re working,” Dak Prescott said. “Yeah, sure, it would’ve been a throwaway and we would’ve punted the ball, but you know, pin them back and then they probably wouldn’t get points that half.”
How The Sequence Unfolded
Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams punched the ball loose from Tyrone Tracy at the two-minute warning and cornerback Shavon Revel recovered at the Dallas 19, returning it back to the 16.
Javonte Williams ran for 6 yards. Prescott threw incomplete deep right to George Pickens, then hit CeeDee Lamb for 9 yards out of bounds on third-and-4. An incompletion deep left followed, then a 5-yard completion to Ryan Flournoy that stayed inbounds and forced Dallas to use a timeout with 58 seconds left.
On third-and-5 from the Dallas 36, Prescott rolled right under pressure and threw toward the sideline. Safety Jevón Holland intercepted at the New York 45.
“He was trying to throw it away and he didn’t get enough on it,” Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said. “And that happens, but it was a big momentum swing.”
What The Giants Did With 49 Seconds
New York needed six plays and 29 seconds of game clock. Jaxson Dart threw incomplete, hit Malachi Fields for 6, survived a false start, then converted third-and-9 with a 16-yard throw to Malik Nabers out of bounds.
Two plays later he hit Darnell Mooney for 18 out of bounds, then Isaiah Likely for 5 to the Dallas 15. On second-and-5 with 25 seconds left, Likely scored from 15 yards. New York led 14-7 at the half.
Dallas got the ball back at its own 32 with 20 seconds and ran three plays, gaining 13 yards.
The Double Dip
The Giants received the second-half kickoff and drove 74 yards on 12 plays over 8:01, with Likely scoring again from 2 yards.
“They went down, scored, and they got the ball in the second half, and they scored,” Schottenheimer said. “And that’s unfortunately what we call a double dip, and they double dipped us.”
Prescott said the same thing.
“They go down, they score, they get the ball to start the half again and score again, and we couldn’t recover,” Prescott said. “Limited our possessions in the second half. Only gave us two possessions, and that was the game right there.”
Dallas had 21 plays and two possessions after halftime, scoring touchdowns on both.
