FRISCO, Texas — Javonte Williams was beating himself up Sunday night over the taunting penalty that followed his fourth-quarter touchdown, Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday.
Williams caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Dak Prescott with 5:21 left to pull Dallas within 28-20 of the New York Giants. The taunting flag pushed the try back, and Brandon Aubrey missed a 48-yard extra point.
Before the flag, Dallas was going for two, which would have made it a six-point game with about five and a half minutes left.
“The Overshown thing is a full-speed decision that he’s got to make,” Schottenheimer said. “We certainly talk about that. But Javonte knows better. I mean, here’s a guy that is maybe the most professional guy in the world, and it’s very uncharacteristic for him to do that. And you gotta understand, we don’t ever want those, but you certainly don’t want those in a one-score game.”
“And we get a chance, we’re going for two,” Schottenheimer continued. “I mean, we’re gonna go make it a six-point game with whatever, five and a half minutes left. But no one’s more sick about that than Javonte. He was beating himself about it last night.”
Williams ran 12 times for 41 yards and a touchdown. He caught 5 passes for 31 yards and a touchdown. He is a member of the team’s leadership council.
Brian Schottenheimer Called DeMarvion Overshown’s Hit A Full-Speed Decision
Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown was also flagged Sunday for a hit near the sideline. He finished with 7 tackles before a hamstring strain knocked him out in the fourth quarter, and he is expected to miss one to two weeks.
Dallas was called for 9 penalties for 90 yards. New York was called for 10 for 114.
The same answer moved to the first half, where Schottenheimer said the game should have been tied at halftime.
“And at the end of the day, as I look back on this game, the game should have been 7-7 at the end of the first half,” Schottenheimer added. “It was a slugfest. Dak’s got to throw the ball away. There were some play calls there I could have had that would have been better in that situation.”
“They take it, they score, make it 14-7, and then we battle back just like you do in most NFL games, and we make it a one-score game with five minutes to go,” Schottenheimer noted. “I bet on our defense being able to give us the ball back and give us a chance.”
New York ran out the final 5:21 after the missed extra point. Dallas did not get the ball back.

The Washington Commanders lost 24-22 at Philadelphia in Week 1. Washington was called for 6 penalties for 45 yards in that game.
