FRISCO, Texas — Tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford would be hard to take off the Dallas Cowboys kickoff coverage unit, even as his role on offense grows, coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday at The Star.
Spann-Ford signed with Dallas as an undrafted free agent out of Minnesota in 2024. He caught 18 passes for 178 yards and 1 touchdown over his first two seasons and has since signed a contract extension with the Cowboys.
As players develop on offense or defense, their special teams roles can shrink, Schottenheimer said. Dallas keeps them in the most important areas, and kickoff coverage is one of them.
“No. I mean, Brevyn’s the type of guy, the enforcer mentality, play style that he has. I mean, as they continue to grow and develop on offense and defense, sometimes you lessen their roles, but you keep them in the most important areas, like kickoff coverage,” Schottenheimer said. “And I thought he played outstanding. And he’d be a hard one to take off because he loves it. He really does. He loves it, and he’s great at it, and it sets the tone.”
“I think overall, really, truly, I want to give Nick Sorensen and Carlos Polk and that entire unit [credit]. I thought they let one get out, but they played physical football yesterday, and I thought that was really, really cool,” Schottenheimer continued.
Nick Sorensen is the Cowboys’ special teams coordinator. Dallas beat the Washington Commanders 37-20 on Sunday at AT&T Stadium.
Brandon Aubrey Extends NFL Record With 60-Yard Field Goal
Kicker Brandon Aubrey made a 60-yard field goal in the fourth quarter Sunday, the NFL’s first of the 2026 season. It was the seventh field goal of 60 yards or more in his career, extending his league record.
Aubrey made 3 field goals and 4 extra points against Washington. He did not attempt a field goal in the 28-20 loss to the New York Giants in the opener. Special teams were one of the areas where Dallas played better Sunday, Schottenheimer said.
“I don’t really look at it that way. I mean, I wanted to play better. I knew if we didn’t play better, we probably wouldn’t win. We did play better in a lot of areas and talked about special teams and things like that,” Schottenheimer said. “But I never get too caught up in those things. I just take it one game at a time.”
Dallas Cowboys Special Teams Head To Rio For Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens allowed a 53-yard kickoff return that set up a New Orleans field goal before halftime Sunday in a 24-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints. Baltimore is 1-1 after beating the Indianapolis Colts 41-23 in Week 1.
Dallas plays Baltimore on Sunday at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, the first NFL game in the city. The Cowboys are the designated home team, and kickoff is 3:25 p.m. CT.
