OXNARD, Calif. — Tyler Guyton made it through a full training camp. The Dallas Cowboys left tackle said Thursday that has not happened in a while.
Guyton was asked how camp went.
“Yeah, good camp. I’m happy about it,” Guyton said. “And it feels good to make it through a camp, even though I had a couple of nicks and bruises. It feels good to actually make it through the final day of camp and have my health.”
He named what has derailed the previous ones.
“Pneumonia, the knee injury,” Guyton explained. “I had a couple of things, and it feels good to really put all these practices and reps under my belt, to have confidence going into the season because I’ve already done it.”
Guyton missed part of an Aug. 4 practice this summer with an elbow injury and returned two days later with the elbow taped.
The Left Tackle Job Is Not Settled
Brian Schottenheimer said earlier this month that Guyton has not been named the starter, and that Nate Thomas needs to raise his level for the competition to remain a competition.
Schottenheimer also listed Guyton among the players who have exceeded his expectations in camp.
Thomas was a seventh-round pick of the Cowboys in 2024 out of Louisiana and missed his entire rookie season. He started at left tackle in the preseason opener at Seattle and played 22 snaps before Marcellus Johnson replaced him.
Dallas drafted Guyton 29th overall in 2024 out of Oklahoma.
The Line Around Him
Terence Steele is the right tackle. He has started 91 of the 96 games he has played since Dallas signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Texas Tech in 2020, started all 17 last season, and took 98% of the offensive snaps.
Tyler Smith is at left guard, Cooper Beebe at center, and Tyler Booker at right guard.
The Cowboys did not play well up front in the first half at Seattle. Schottenheimer said Thursday the group has spent the week on pad level, hat placement, combination blocks, and footwork, and that struggles early in a game usually trace back to technique rather than effort.
Nick Leverett, Trevor Keegan, T.J. Bass, and Thomas are competing for backup jobs. Dak Prescott said Thursday he is watching how they respond after a bad rep and declined to separate them.
What Comes Next
Guyton is not expected to play much in the preseason. Schottenheimer said Aug. 3 that Dallas plans to hold most of its starters out of all three exhibitions.
Thursday closed the Oxnard portion of camp. Dallas plays at the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday and holds open practices at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco on Aug. 25 and Aug. 26.
The preseason ends against the New Orleans Saints at AT&T Stadium on Friday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. CT. Dallas opens the regular season Sept. 13 at the New York Giants.
