PHOENIX — The Texas Rangers recalled outfielder Alejandro Osuna from Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday and optioned infielder/outfielder Cam Cauley to Round Rock in the corresponding move. Texas made the swap with designated hitter Joc Pederson‘s status unclear for the coming days, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reported about an hour before first pitch against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.
Pederson will be examined by a hand specialist, and the hand and wrist area remains swollen and sore, Grant reported. No determination has been made.
Pederson was hit on the left hand by a pitch in the fifth inning of Saturday’s 6-2 win over Arizona. He stayed in to run the bases and was lifted for a pinch-hitter his next time up. X-rays came back negative, and Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said Pederson would undergo further testing, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reported.
Infielder Nicky Lopez also left Saturday’s game, with a hamstring issue. Neither Pederson nor Lopez was in Sunday’s lineup.
Both Osuna and Cauley were already on the 40-man roster, so no additional 40-man move was required. Texas remains at the 28-man September limit.
Alejandro Osuna Returns To The Texas Rangers Outfield
Osuna, 23, last appeared in a major league game Aug. 8 and was optioned the following day, with infielder Jonah Bride promoted into the open roster spot.
He has batted .255/.347/.297 across 76 games and 220 plate appearances for Texas this season, with 1 home run, 24 RBI, and 5 stolen bases. Defensively, he has appeared in 55 games in left field, 15 in center field, and 13 in right field.
Texas optioned Osuna to Round Rock on March 23 to open the season.
The left-handed hitter made his major league debut on May 25, 2025, and hit .212/.313/.278 with 2 home runs and 15 RBI over 63 games as a rookie. His career line stands at .236/.332/.289 in 139 games. Osuna signed with the Rangers as an international free agent on Oct. 6, 2020, out of Ahome, Mexico.
Cam Cauley Optioned After His Second Stint With Texas
Cauley, 23, was recalled Sept. 1, the day major league active rosters expanded to 28 players.
His first stint ran from June 29 to Aug. 14. He batted .207 (12-for-58) with 1 home run, 1 triple, 3 doubles, 1 RBI, 5 walks, and 9 runs scored in 28 games, finishing that stretch with a .626 OPS. Texas used him at second base in 12 games, center field in 11, right field in 3, and shortstop in 2.
Cauley tripled in his major league debut June 29 at Cleveland for his first hit. The Rangers listed him as the seventh player in franchise history to do that.
After the Aug. 14 option, Cauley hit .339/.397/.732 (19-for-56) with 6 home runs, 4 doubles, and 14 RBI in 13 games for Round Rock. The Rangers listed him as the Pacific Coast League leader in home runs and RBI since Aug. 19.
Texas drafted Cauley in the third round in 2021 out of Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, Texas. He went 29-for-29 on stolen base attempts over his first 74 games with Round Rock this season.
The Rangers are 73-76 and second in the American League West, 2 games behind the Houston Astros. Texas trails the Cleveland Guardians by 2 games for the third American League wild card.
Cal Quantrill starts Sunday’s finale for Texas. First pitch is scheduled for 3:10 p.m. CT. The Rangers return home Tuesday to open a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox at Globe Life Field, with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. CT.
