‘We Think We’re Close’: Stephen Jones Says Dallas Cowboys Still Open To Adding Before NFL Trade Deadline

FRISCO, Texas — Stephen Jones said the Dallas Cowboys remain open to adding a player before the Nov. 10 NFL trade deadline, speaking Monday on 105.3 The Fan’s “K&C Masterpiece” a day after a 33-30 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The Cowboys COO and executive vice president said Dallas believes it is close.
Dallas has been linked to several outside linebackers ahead of the deadline. The team has been consistent about adding players who can help, in the offseason and during the season, according to Jones.
“Yeah, we’ve always been consistent,” Jones said. “If we can find a player that we feel like can help us, I think we’ve done it throughout the offseason this year as well as into the season, with the last one, of course, being Joey Porter. But we’re always open to looking at making our team better.”
Dallas Cowboys’ Trades Since March
Dallas agreed to acquire edge rusher Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers on March 9 for a 2027 fourth-round pick. Gary made the Pro Bowl in 2024.
On Oct. 1, the Cowboys acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick. Porter had missed Pittsburgh’s first three games while seeking an extension and is in the final year of his rookie contract.
Dallas weighs what it gives up for this season against what it means for the future, Jones said. He does not think adding a player now would be a mistake.
“No, I think right now we’re convinced that we can,” Jones explained. “We think we’re close, we think we can get this ship righted, and that we can have success. And so certainly if we felt like we were getting a player, we always measure how much value we’re giving for this year only and then what it means to the future.”
Stephen Jones Focused On Indianapolis Colts Before Deadline
The Cowboys play the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Nov. 8, two days before the deadline. Jones would not get into whether a loss in Indianapolis would push Dallas toward selling.
“Guys, we’re looking at getting better this week,” Jones said. “And we’ve got a big game against the Colts, and that’s what we’re focused on.”
Dallas is 3-5, second in the NFC East behind the 4-2-1 New York Giants. Kickoff at Lucas Oil Stadium is set for noon CT on FOX.
