SMU Moves 2027 Oklahoma Game At AT&T Stadium To Labor Day Weekend

DALLAS — SMU will face Oklahoma at AT&T Stadium a week earlier than originally scheduled in 2027, moving the matchup to Saturday, Sept. 4, during Labor Day weekend.

The game had been set for Sept. 11. SMU announced the change Wednesday, with Oklahoma confirming the new date the same day.

Oklahoma also added Utah State to its 2027 schedule. The Sooners will host the Aggies on Aug. 28 in Norman before traveling to Arlington the following week.

The SMU-Oklahoma game had already been moved away from Gerald J. Ford Stadium. SMU announced in February that its 2027 home game against Oklahoma and its 2029 home game against LSU would both be played at AT&T Stadium.

Gerald J. Ford Stadium has a listed capacity of 33,200. AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, seats roughly 80,000.

SMU Looking To Expand Reach With AT&T Stadium Games

SMU athletic director Damon Evans said in February that the move to AT&T Stadium was tied to revenue, exposure, and the school’s continued growth in the ACC.

“Playing Oklahoma in 2027 and LSU in 2029 at AT&T Stadium reflects both where SMU Football has been and where it is going,” Evans said. “These games evoke our historic presence on the national stage, including the Pony Express era, while delivering meaningful opportunities for revenue generation, brand visibility, and partner engagement in direct support of the vision of Mustang Partners and our continued growth in the ACC.”

SMU has competed in the ACC since July 2024 after spending 11 seasons in the American Athletic Conference.

Mustangs coach Rhett Lashlee also pointed to the value of playing in an NFL venue when the move was announced.

“As Dallas’s only college football program, it’s important that we continue to play in venues that allow football fans across the Metroplex to support the Mustangs,” Lashlee said. “As we work to elevate SMU back onto the national stage, we’re intentional about scheduling other national brands in iconic venues, on national television.”

“Our players aspire to play in the NFL, and the opportunity to compete in the Cowboys’ premier stadium gives them a chance to experience that environment and showcase their talent on a big stage,” Lashlee continued.

Oklahoma Has Won Five Straight At AT&T Stadium

The 2027 meeting will be Oklahoma’s ninth game at AT&T Stadium.

The Sooners are 6-2 at the venue and have won their last five appearances there. Oklahoma went 5-0 in Big 12 Championship Games played at AT&T Stadium.

Both of the Sooners’ most recent trips came in 2020. Oklahoma beat Iowa State 27-21 in the Big 12 Championship Game before returning later that month to beat Florida 55-20 in the Cotton Bowl.

Oklahoma leads the all-time series against SMU 6-1-1.

The 2027 game completes a two-game home-and-home that began Sept. 9, 2023, in Norman. Oklahoma won that matchup 28-11.

SMU Returns To Cowboys’ Home Venue

For SMU, the trip to AT&T Stadium will bring the program back to the home of the Cowboys for the first time in more than four decades.

The Mustangs began playing select games at Texas Stadium in Irving in 1972 and played all of their home games there from 1979 through 1986.

SMU had four 10-win seasons during that eight-year run and finished with a winning record in seven of the eight seasons. The program claims national championships in 1981 and 1982 and won Southwest Conference titles in 1981, 1982, and 1984.

The 2027 Oklahoma game will be the first of two scheduled SMU appearances at AT&T Stadium.

LSU Follows Oklahoma On SMU Future Schedule

SMU’s series with LSU begins Sept. 2, 2028, in Baton Rouge.

The return game is scheduled for Sept. 1, 2029, at AT&T Stadium. It will be the second of the two neutral-site home games SMU has scheduled there.

The 2028 matchup will be the first meeting between SMU and LSU since 1934.

A kickoff time and ticket information for the 2027 Oklahoma game have not yet been announced.
