ARLINGTON, Texas — Right-hander Cal Quantrill landed on the 15-day injured list Sunday. In the same set of moves, the Texas Rangers recalled right-hander Winston Santos from Triple-A Round Rock.
Texas Rangers PR posted the transactions at 12:20 p.m. CT. First pitch of the series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays was a little over an hour away.
On Saturday, Quantrill got one out in the second inning of a 6-2 win before leaving with right lat tightness. He was scheduled for an MRI on Sunday. No diagnosis has been announced.
Dated Sunday, a 15-day placement runs past the Sept. 27 regular-season finale. Texas (78-77) went into Sunday a game up on the Houston Astros in the American League West, with seven to play.
Cal Quantrill Made 15 Starts For The Texas Rangers In 2026
Quantrill went 9-5 this season with 81 strikeouts over 32 appearances, 15 of them starts. Every one of those starts came after Jack Leiter went on the injured list June 21 following ankle surgery.
As a starter, Quantrill was 6-4 with a 2.51 ERA. Over his last nine starts since July 28, he carried a 1.82 ERA, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reported. He had a career-high six consecutive quality starts entering Saturday.
On Sept. 13 at Arizona, Quantrill lasted 6 innings before his back tightened. Five days later, his last pitch against Toronto was a four-seam fastball at 87.8 mph, more than 6 mph below his season average on the pitch.
“No real update other than he’s going to get an MRI tomorrow,” Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said after Saturday’s game. “So I’m not sure the extent of the injury. It’s kind of in the lat area. So kind of see what happens tomorrow.”
The Rangers were expecting six or seven innings out of Quantrill on Saturday, Wyatt Langford said on Rangers Sports Network afterward.
“A lot,” Langford said. “It’s really tough. Obviously, Cal’s been one of our better pitchers all year. So we’re all expecting him to go six or seven innings, pitch one, two runs, and then that happens. And then Monty’s huge to be able to come out. I think he put up zero runs. So they’re super awesome. They’ve been great all year and really carrying it lately.”
Winston Santos Returns To The Texas Rangers Bullpen
Santos, 24, has been on the 40-man roster since after the 2024 season. He made his major league debut this year and has thrown 2 innings, allowing 2 hits and 2 earned runs, with 1 walk and 1 strikeout.
Texas signed him out of the Dominican Republic as an international free agent on July 2, 2019. He has split 2026 between Double-A Frisco and Round Rock. A stress reaction in his back cost him most of 2025, and a comebacker fractured his left hand in a live batting practice session Feb. 17, which kept him out to start this season.
With Sunday’s moves, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit, with six players on the 60-day injured list.
The bullpen Santos joins covered 7 2/3 innings behind Quantrill on Saturday. Over the homestand, Rangers relievers hold a 1.84 ERA. Last week, a Rangers reliever threw 4 or more scoreless innings in three straight games, with Nathan Eovaldi covering 4 innings Wednesday, Cody Bradford 4 1/3 on Thursday, and Trevor Williams 4 on Friday, according to Landry.
Toronto scored twice Saturday, both after Jordan Montgomery left. Schumaker went through five relievers to get there.
“And then we started matching up best we could against a really good team,” Schumaker said. “And they only gave up, what, two runs total, one run after Monty came out of the game, I think, something like that. So a lot happened, sorry, in the pitching side. But, yeah, Monty, fantastic. But, again, these are team wins, and there’s also because of what happened the day before really covering us today.”
Jacob deGrom (11-9, 3.79 ERA) starts Sunday’s finale at 1:35 p.m. CT on Rangers Sports Network. The New York Mets come to Globe Life Field for three games starting Tuesday. Texas closes the regular season Sept. 25 to 27 at the Minnesota Twins.
