FRISCO, Texas — The Philadelphia Eagles are the only unbeaten team left in the NFC East after Week 2, and two of the division’s four starting quarterbacks left their games hurt. Jayden Daniels dislocated his left elbow on the final play of the first half of the Washington Commanders‘ 37-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at AT&T Stadium. On Monday night, Jaxson Dart hurt his left knee on the New York Giants‘ first series of a 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium.
Philadelphia won 24-20 at the Tennessee Titans on Sunday when Jalen Hurts threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Darius Cooper in the final seconds. Dallas and New York are both 1-1. Washington is 0-2, and both of its losses have come against division opponents.
Dak Prescott Breaks Tony Romo Record As Dallas Cowboys Beat Washington Commanders
Dak Prescott went 26-of-31 passing for 279 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions against Washington. His last touchdown pass, a 24-yard throw to CeeDee Lamb with 3:07 left, was the 249th of his career and moved him past Tony Romo for the most in franchise history. Lamb caught 8 passes for 153 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jake Ferguson caught the other 2 touchdowns among his 4 receptions for 43 yards.
Ten years earlier, Washington was also the opponent for Prescott’s first NFL touchdown, a 6-yard run in a 27-23 win on Sept. 18, 2016. He wore a Roger Staubach jersey to his postgame news conference Sunday.
“I’m blessed, honored,” Prescott said. “As I’ve told you earlier in the week, records are meant to be broken. This is my time to break this one. Pretty cool to do it against the team I [threw] my first touchdown against, what, 10 years ago or so. So definitely humbling. Something I don’t take for granted, the great history of this organization, of the past quarterbacks before me, obviously wearing, to me, the greatest one, right?”
“And so super, super honored, super thankful. God’s great,” Prescott continued. “I’m not taking it lightly, but as I told you all, it’s just the beginning. I want to double it. I plan to play for a while, so just getting started.”
The win was Prescott’s 20th straight at home against NFC East opponents. According to NFL Research, that ties the longest home winning streak in division games since the 1970 merger.
With Dallas ahead 20-13 in the third quarter, rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham forced a fumble on a screen pass. Dee Winters recovered at the Washington 18, and Prescott hit Ferguson for a 12-yard touchdown two plays later. Brandon Aubrey made all 3 of his field goal attempts, including a 60-yarder in the fourth quarter.
Dallas lost two defensive backs in the first half, safety P.J. Locke to a foot injury and cornerback Cobie Durant to a hamstring injury. Neither returned. The Cowboys face the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, with kickoff set for 3:25 p.m. CT on CBS.
Jalen Hurts, DeVonta Smith Rally Philadelphia Eagles Past Tennessee Titans
Hurts went 26-of-37 for 264 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions in Nashville. Tennessee returned his first interception 92 yards to set up a touchdown. His second came on the drive before his last, and the Titans turned it into a field goal for a 20-17 lead with under two minutes left.
Hurts then went 6-of-8 for 61 yards on a nine-play, 65-yard drive. Cooper, an undrafted second-year receiver from Tarleton State in Stephenville, Texas, caught the winning touchdown for the first score of his NFL career.
DeVonta Smith caught 10 of 13 targets for 117 yards and 1 touchdown, a 22-yard catch just before halftime. On the final drive, he caught 4 passes for 38 yards, including a 19-yarder to the Tennessee 3. It was his 16th career 100-yard game and his first since the Eagles traded A.J. Brown to New England on June 1.
“I take a lot of pride in it,” Smith said. “I feel like it was time for me to go out there, time for me to show what I can do, that I can be that guy. I had the opportunity, and I went out there and did it.”
Saquon Barkley suffered a stinger on Philadelphia’s first offensive play and finished with 4 carries for 9 yards. Tank Bigsby led the Eagles with 13 carries for 33 yards and scored a touchdown. As a team, Philadelphia ran 32 times for 89 yards.
Tight end Dallas Goedert hurt his knee in the second quarter and did not return. He sprained his MCL and is expected to miss multiple weeks, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. The same day, the Eagles agreed to sign Zach Ertz to their practice squad, a move first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Ertz spent eight-plus seasons in Philadelphia and is 11 catches shy of the franchise record of 589.
Barkley was scheduled for an MRI on Monday. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni had not received results on Barkley or Goedert when he met with reporters that afternoon.
“It’s still early in the day,” Sirianni said. “I’ll get with those guys later today… They were off today, everything got started a little bit later, so we’ll see as the week progresses.”
Philadelphia plays the Chicago Bears on Monday night at Soldier Field, with kickoff at 7:15 p.m. CT on ESPN and ABC. The Cowboys visit the Eagles on Monday, Oct. 26, and host them on Thanksgiving.
Jaxson Dart Believed To Have Sprained MCL As New York Giants Fall To Los Angeles Rams
Dart was hit by two Rams pass rushers on a third-and-8 incompletion on New York’s seventh snap. He walked off under his own power, went into the medical tent, and was ruled out at halftime after going 3-of-5 for 20 yards.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported late Monday that Dart is believed to have sprained his MCL. His X-rays were negative, and he is scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday. Rapoport wrote that Dart is “expected to miss some time, though in general, positive news.”
Giants coach John Harbaugh would not confirm the report after the game and said the team would wait for the MRI.
“We’ll know more tomorrow. That’s in the neighborhood of it,” Harbaugh said. “We’ll get an MRI tomorrow and have a really good feel for it. Give you more information then.”
Dart grabbed at his knee after the hit and stayed down while the Giants’ training staff attended to him. He had opened the season with 23-of-29 passing for 230 yards and 3 touchdowns in the 28-20 win over Dallas at MetLife Stadium.
“The fact that it’s not that outcome that you’re talking about, the devastating outcome, is really good news,” Harbaugh explained.
Jameis Winston played the rest of the way and went 11-of-27 for 111 yards and 1 interception. He was sacked twice. Cam Skattebo led New York with 12 carries for 36 yards, and the Rams outgained the Giants 481-182.
“We didn’t execute,” Harbaugh said. “We didn’t complete passes. We didn’t run the ball well. We didn’t make plays down the field. We had opportunities, and we just didn’t do it.”
Outside linebacker Brian Burns has a low ankle sprain, Harbaugh said. Wide receiver Malik Nabers dislocated his right shoulder late in the first quarter and popped it back into place. He returned in the second quarter. The Giants host the Titans on Sunday at noon CT at MetLife Stadium.
Jayden Daniels Dislocates Elbow As Washington Commanders Turn To Marcus Mariota
On third-and-goal from the Dallas 1 with 3 seconds left in the half, left guard Chris Paul stepped on Daniels’ foot as Daniels backed away from center. Daniels’ non-throwing elbow bent backward when he braced himself, and he was carted off with a towel over his head. He was 11-of-17 passing for 96 yards and 1 touchdown at the time and had run 7 times for 69 yards.
Commanders coach Dan Quinn said after the game that X-rays showed no fracture. Daniels was ruled out early in the third quarter after dislocating the same elbow against Seattle last November.
“I thought he was really playing his [rear end] off,” Quinn said. “And we will rally so hard around Marcus until Jayden’s back. And that’s what we talked about as a team.”
Marcus Mariota went 11-of-16 for 111 yards and 1 touchdown in relief. Stefon Diggs caught 5 passes for 47 yards and both Washington touchdowns, one from each quarterback.
Daniels had an MRI on Monday and will consult specialists in the coming days, Quinn told reporters. Quinn did not give a timeline for his return and confirmed Mariota will start in Week 3. The second overall pick in the 2015 draft made 8 starts for Washington last season and threw for 1,695 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions.
Washington lost its opener 24-22 at Philadelphia, where the Eagles stopped a two-point conversion attempt late in the game. The Commanders host the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at noon CT.
