DALLAS — Josh Broghamer is leaving the Dallas Mavericks to join the Orlando Magic as an assistant coach, sources told Dallas Sports Journal..

Broghamer spent the last three seasons on Jason Kidd’s staff in Dallas, working primarily in player development. He is the second assistant from that staff to land on Sean Sweeney’s staff in Orlando this offseason.

The move reunites Broghamer with Sweeney, who was hired as the Magic’s head coach in late May after one season as associate head coach of the San Antonio Spurs. Both worked under Kidd in Dallas, overlapping for two seasons of his five-year tenure. They also spent four years together on Kidd’s staff in Milwaukee from 2014 to 2018.

Broghamer began his NBA career in 2013 as a video intern with the Phoenix Suns under Jeff Hornacek. He joined the Milwaukee Bucks the following year as a video coordinator and later moved into an assistant role. Five seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers followed, from 2018 to 2023, where he worked in advance scouting and player development under Tyronn Lue, Larry Drew, John Beilein, and J.B. Bickerstaff.

Josh Broghamer’s Work With Cooper Flagg

Dallas named Broghamer its summer league coach in 2025, the summer the Mavericks drafted Cooper Flagg with the first overall pick. Broghamer conducted Flagg’s pregame workout routine throughout the rookie’s first NBA season.

Flagg averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in 70 games during the 2025-26 season. He shot 46.8% from the field and 82.7% from the free-throw line. Flagg was named Rookie of the Year and earned All-Rookie honors. His career-high 51 points came in his rookie year, and he holds the record for the most 40-point games by a teenager in NBA history.

Dallas Mavericks Coaching Staff Under Dusty May

All three of Kidd’s lead assistants have found new jobs since Dusty May was hired. Frank Vogel agreed to become associate head coach of the Golden State Warriors under Steve Kerr, the same title he held in Dallas last season. Jay Triano returned to the Portland Trail Blazers on first-year head coach Micah Nori’s staff. Popeye Jones joined Sweeney in Orlando after one season back in Dallas, and the Magic announced him as part of their staff on July 6.

May has since assembled his own bench. Willie Green, the former New Orleans Pelicans head coach, came aboard as lead assistant. Joe Boylan joined after previous stops with Golden State, New Orleans, Minnesota, and Memphis, and he coached the Mavericks’ summer league team this year. Garrett Temple retired July 4 after a 16-year playing career and accepted a coaching role. Drew Williamson and Mody Maor both followed May from Michigan.

May said during his introductory news conference that he would retain members of Kidd’s staff. With Broghamer headed to Orlando, assistant coach Phil Handy is the only holdover left in Dallas.
