OXNARD, Calif. — Jerry Jones has watched 10 practices since the Dallas Cowboys arrived in Oxnard. One player has stood out to him.
Tyler Guyton has worked with the starting offense throughout camp as Dallas sorts out its left tackle position, and Jones singled him out Thursday when talking about what he has seen over the first two weeks.
“I really like [Tyler] Guyton,” Jones said. “Guyton has really, I think been at the level of competition that we had hoped for with him. That’s plus. I like some of those faces that are showing out on the defensive side of the ball, and they’re doing it in a way that they should be able to sustain it into the season.”
Tyler Guyton Has Stayed With the First Team
Guyton entered camp competing with Nathan Thomas, but the first-team work has continued to go Guyton’s way.
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said last week that Dallas planned to keep Guyton with the starters while looking for more from Thomas. ESPN’s Todd Archer reported Aug. 4 that Guyton had moved ahead in the competition.
Tyler Smith backed Guyton publicly Aug. 9.
Dallas selected Guyton No. 29 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft after trading down from No. 24. The Cowboys also received the No. 73 pick from Detroit in that move.
Guyton played two seasons at TCU before finishing his college career at Oklahoma.
Through two NFL seasons, he has appeared in 25 games with 21 starts. Guyton played 650 offensive snaps last year before Dallas placed him on injured reserve Dec. 24.
Thomas came from the same 2024 draft class. Dallas selected him in the seventh round at No. 233 with a pick acquired from the Raiders in 2022.
His rookie season ended before it started when the Cowboys placed him on injured reserve Aug. 27, 2024. Thomas returned last season and appeared in all 17 games, starting four times at left tackle. Dallas went 2-2 in those starts.
Dallas Cowboys Defense Also Gets Jerry Jones’ Attention
Jones did not limit his answer to Guyton.
He also mentioned players emerging on defense under first-year coordinator Christian Parker. Dallas held a joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday and went through its final practice before the preseason opener Thursday.
The Cowboys have changed a large part of their defensive personnel since last season, adding Quinnen Williams at last year’s trade deadline and then acquiring Rashan Gary, Jalen Thompson and Cobie Durant during the offseason. Dallas also drafted Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence in the first round.
Saturday will provide the first game action for that group.
The Cowboys play at Seattle at 7 p.m. CT before returning to the practice field Monday in Oxnard. A joint practice with the New Orleans Saints follows Tuesday.
Dallas will then return to Texas, with an opening ceremony scheduled for Aug. 25 at 5:30 p.m. CT before practice at Ford Center at The Star.
