FRISCO, Texas — Jerry Jones said Tuesday that Mexico is where the Dallas Cowboys would play international games if given a complete choice, five days before Dallas plays the Baltimore Ravens in Rio de Janeiro. The Cowboys owner and general manager made his weekly appearance on Shan & RJ on 105.3 The Fan two days after a 37-20 win over the Washington Commanders.
The NFL scheduled a record nine international games this season. Jones likes playing them, and Dallas keeps a presence in Mexico whenever it can, down to holding cheerleader tryouts there.
“This was our time to go. We have kind of a schedule of when teams need to play internationally, each team, and this was our time. And so I’m good with it,” Jones said. “When we look to the future and you say, how do you feel about it in the future? Certainly it’s to our preferred thoughts to play in Mexico. We’ve always loved to play in Mexico. So [if] we’re really given a complete choice, Mexico is where we’d like to play games.”
Jerry Jones Sees NFL Team Outside United States As Far Off
Jones said he does not know about an NFL expansion team based outside the United States. Brazil is hosting its third regular-season NFL game Sunday, and its first outside São Paulo.
“I see the games continuing like they are, and I see the ethos, if you will, of the game, the story of the game, really expanding all over the world,” Jones explained. “But fundamentally, I think that to have an expansion team probably is pretty far. If it’s here, it’s in the future.”
Jerry Jones Has Automobile Dealership Ties In Brazil
Jones has an interest in automobile dealerships in São Paulo as well as Rio, he said. Sunday’s game at Maracanã Stadium is the NFL’s first in Rio.
“And so I have an associate that I’ve been in partners with for 30 years that we’re the largest dealers in Brazil. And so I’ve got a lot of good friends I’ll be saying hello to down there,” Jones said.
