‘I Want To Be Around Men Like That’: Dak Prescott Praises Dallas Cowboys Rookie Camden Brown

OXNARD, Calif. — Camden Brown told Dak Prescott he was from Louisiana, and Prescott said Thursday that was the end of it. The Dallas Cowboys quarterback was asked what he has liked about the undrafted rookie receiver, who caught both Dallas touchdowns in Saturday’s preseason opener at Seattle.

“Well, you just said it right there. He won me over when he told me he was from Louisiana,” Prescott said. “And then from there, just having a conversation. Hearing his story early and then hearing his mindset back in May of how he just wants to help, whether it be that little team or the big team. It’s not about his individual success or what comes from there. He just wants to be help, and he knows the kind of player he is.”

Prescott said the way Brown carries the story is what stands out.

“Whatever comes his way, whatever job, whatever responsibilities he has, he’s accepting and he’s excited to do it,” Prescott explained. “And then you hear his story, you spend any amount of time with him, he wears that, and that’s who he is each and every day. And I want to be around men like that as much as I can. So he’s doing everything right.”

Brown grew up in Monroe, Louisiana. Prescott was born in Sulphur and raised in Haughton.

Brown is on one of the smaller teams Brian Schottenheimer split the roster into during camp, a group Prescott also belongs to.

What Dak Prescott Looks For In A Receiver

Brown’s two touchdowns in Seattle came on a 39-yard catch from Sam Howell and a 2-yard grab from Joe Milton III. He was targeted 3 times and caught all 3 for 62 yards, a team high.

Asked how much Brown’s ability to track the ball and adjust in the air matters at this level, Prescott put contested catches at the top of his list.

“Tracking the ball is huge, and then the contested catches, to me, that’s number one when you’re looking for a receiver,” Prescott said. “There’s not a lot of times in this league where you’re just wide open. A lot of times I throw it away from the defender more than it is to a receiver. And so if you aren’t confident about making physical catches and contested catches, then it’s going to be hard to last at that position.”

Prescott named the four receivers ahead of Brown as the ones to learn from.

“He’s got, obviously, two really good older guys in George and CeeDee, and then as well as Flo and Turp, guys to learn from,” Prescott continued. “He’s going to keep pushing himself and be the best version of himself every day that he gets out there, and that’s all you can really ask of Cam.”

From Auburn To Georgia Southern To Oxnard

Brown spent three seasons at Auburn from 2022 through 2024 and caught 26 passes for 289 yards there. He transferred to Georgia Southern for 2025 and caught 65 passes for 1,079 yards and 14 touchdowns in 13 games, setting the school record for receiving touchdowns and finishing second in the Sun Belt.

He attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and originally committed to Pittsburgh before flipping to Auburn. His father, Alander Brown, played college football at Louisiana-Monroe.

Dallas signed Brown after the 2026 draft as one of 11 undrafted free agents. He is listed at 6-3 and 204 pounds.

The Roster Math

CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens are locked in at the top. Ryan Flournoy and KaVontae Turpin hold the next two spots. Jonathan Mingo, Anthony Smith, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling are competing with Brown behind them.

Dallas waived Traeshon Holden this week to make room for Von Miller. The Cowboys cut from 91 players to 53 before the regular season.

Schottenheimer said Thursday that what Brown does against Dallas defensive backs in practice carries more weight with him than the Seattle game did.

Thursday was the Cowboys’ last practice in Oxnard. Dallas plays at the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday, then closes the preseason against the New Orleans Saints at AT&T Stadium on Friday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. CT.
