OXNARD, Calif. — Marquez Valdes-Scantling sat out Thursday’s Dallas Cowboys practice while the team checked his knee. Dallas plays its preseason opener at Seattle on Saturday.
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said there was nothing else significant to report from the previous day. Cornerback Devin Moore was set to work back into practice Thursday.
“Yeah, really nothing to report,” Schottenheimer said. “Really the only thing that’s different: MVS will miss practice today. We’re getting a look at his knee. Nothing we’re overly concerned about.”
Marquez Valdes-Scantling Misses Practice
Valdes-Scantling signed a one-year deal with Dallas on April 27, reportedly worth $1.49 million. He will turn 32 in October.
Green Bay drafted him in the fifth round in 2018. He spent four years with the Packers, then two with Kansas City and won Super Bowls LVII and LVIII with the Chiefs.
Buffalo and New Orleans were his next stops in 2024. Valdes-Scantling caught 19 passes for 411 yards and 4 touchdowns that season, making eight starts in 14 games.
Seattle signed him last March, so Saturday would have been a return to a familiar place even before Dallas put him on the injury report. Valdes-Scantling spent the 2025 preseason with the Seahawks but was waived Aug. 26.
San Francisco picked him up the next day. After the 49ers released him in October, Pittsburgh signed him and eventually moved him from the practice squad to the active roster.
Between San Francisco and Pittsburgh, Valdes-Scantling played 10 games last season. He had 14 catches for 120 yards and a touchdown.
His career totals stand at 219 receptions, 3,686 yards and 21 touchdowns. Valdes-Scantling has another 406 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns in 11 playoff appearances.
Dallas Cowboys Still Sorting Out Receiver Room
CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens are at the top of the receiver group. KaVontae Turpin and Ryan Flournoy are back as well, with Valdes-Scantling trying to stick among the veterans behind Lamb and Pickens.
Jonathan Mingo, Traeshon Holden, Denzel Mims and rookie Anthony Smith are also in camp.
Dallas has three preseason games left before the roster drops to 53 players on Aug. 30.
The Cowboys start Saturday in Seattle. Arizona is next on Aug. 22, followed by the Aug. 28 preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints at AT&T Stadium.
Dallas practices Friday at 1:45 p.m. CT before leaving Oxnard. Saturday’s game at Lumen Field starts at 7 p.m. CT on CBS.
