CHICAGO — When the Chicago Bears take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 3 at Soldier Field, Caleb Williams could be under center.
Williams, who suffered a right hamstring injury in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings and needed to be carted off to the locker room, is considered “week-to-week,” per Bears head coach Ben Johnson, who will not rule out his star QB for the Eagles game on September 28.
“He’s right now working through every avenue that he’s got available to get back on track here,” Johnson said. “We’ll see what that looks like. Here’s what I know. This guy’s a little bit different than the average human being. I said that last night. I’ll double down on that. He gets back — he has in the past — a lot faster than what people can anticipate, and so I’m not putting a timeline on this. We’re going to say week-to-week. He’s going to attack this with everything that he knows.”
Williams And Bears Struggled In Week 2 After Shining In Week 1
The Bears lost to the Vikings by a final score of 9-3. Williams was injured in the fourth quarter at the 7:36 mark. He was replaced by Tyson Bagent, who will start against the Eagles if Williams can’t play.
Chicago scored 59 points in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers. Williams had 269 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, 65 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
However, the Bears’ offense was a mess against the Vikings, who have one of the best defenses in the NFL. Chicago had only 297 total yards after putting up 552 total yards against Carolina.
Williams finished the Bears-Vikings game with 138 passing yards, zero passing touchdowns and one interception. He also had 42 rushing yards on five carries. The 24-year-old was injured on his fifth carry.
“Overall, you look at what got us in the first half,” Johnson said. “Offensively, we had way too many penalties. I think we had seven in the first half. Really threw us off course a little bit, and against a good defense like that, you can’t shoot yourself in the foot. We had way too many turnovers, the blocked field goal hurts, and we had missed red zone opportunities as a whole.”
Caleb Has Never Missed An NFL Game
It will be fascinating to see if Williams can play against the Eagles, who are 2-0.
Chicago defeated Philadelphia last season on November 28 by a final score of 24-15. Williams had 154 passing yards, one passing touchdown and one interception in that contest.
The Bears selected Williams with the first overall pick in the 2024 draft. The USC product has 7,890 passing yards, 49 passing touchdowns, 14 interceptions, 984 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns in 36 starts. He hasn’t missed a game in the NFL yet.
