ARLINGTON, Texas — Brandon Aubrey made a 60-yard field goal from the Washington 42 on fourth-and-4 early in the fourth quarter Sunday, giving the Dallas Cowboys a 30-13 lead in a 37-20 win over the Washington Commanders. It was the seventh field goal of 60 yards or longer in his career, which extended his NFL record.
Dallas had taken over at its own 41 after a missed Washington field goal and gained 17 yards before stalling on a third-down incompletion. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer did not consider punting.
“I never hesitate to throw them out there,” Schottenheimer said. “Actually, I really, if it’s anywhere near midfield, I just send them. I just point. I’m like, ‘Yeah, field goal.’ That’s all I do. I just point.”

Aubrey also made field goals of 25 and 44 yards and all 4 extra points, finishing with 13 points. The retractable roof at AT&T Stadium was closed. Washington’s kicker made two of three, missing wide right from 51 yards on the drive before Aubrey’s 60-yarder.
Von Miller saw the kick change the game for a defense that was already playing with a lead.
“This is the type of game that I excel best at. We get up on the team and they’re trying to get back in the game, and I can just time snap count and just go and just rush,” Miller said. “Had a lot of opportunities to do what I do best. I still do a lot of things great, but I had a lot of opportunities individually to do what I do best. Defensively, we got them one-dimensional, and our offense was able to take off. Aubrey [made a] 60-yard field goal, like, easy. So he was able to keep the leverage on our side, and it was a great team win.”
Brian Schottenheimer Plays For ‘No Negative Yards’ Near Midfield
Having Aubrey changes how Schottenheimer calls drives once Dallas crosses midfield. He and Dak Prescott talk about it during games.
“Yeah, I don’t take it for granted. I’m always trying to get a little closer. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say Dak and I, we do talk quite a bit about, like, no negative yards. If you’re somewhere around midfield, we feel pretty comfortable that if we don’t have a negative play that we’re going to have a chance to get points,” Schottenheimer explained. “And he is a tremendous, tremendous weapon. And the thing I love about him, man, is, like, them, it just like, we can’t see it. You guys see it better. People see it better on [TV]. But like I’m never worried, because it’s usually right directly down the middle of the goal post, and that’s unusual.”
The 60-yarder left Aubrey with seven career makes from 60 yards or longer, more than anyone in league history. Schottenheimer closed his postgame news conference by talking about an even longer try.
“We’re not afraid of it, so stay tuned,” Schottenheimer said. “Could be anytime soon.”
Aubrey and the Cowboys play the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 27 at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Kickoff is set for 3:25 p.m. CT on CBS.
