Anthony Davis and the Washington Wizards have decided to hold off on extension talks until after the 2026-27 season starts, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.
Davis is eligible for a four-year, $275 million contract extension.
The Wizards acquired Davis from the Dallas Mavericks last season. Davis will make $58.5 million next season. He has a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season.
Davis didn’t play for Washington last season because of ligament damage in his left hand. The Chicago native finished the 2025-26 campaign with averages of 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game.
A top-75 player of all time, Davis has played for the New Orleans Pelicans, Los Angeles Lakers and Mavericks. He’s a 10-time All-Star and one-time NBA champion with career averages of 24.0 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 2.3 blocks per game in the regular season and 26.1 points, 11.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.3 steals and 2.2 blocks per game in the playoffs.
Davis, 33, has made five All-NBA teams and five All-Defensive teams. He won the 2020 championship with the Lakers against the Miami Heat at the Walt Disney World Bubble.
Davis appeared in only 29 games with the Mavericks, who traded Luka Dončić to the Lakers to acquire the Kentucky product in what is considered one of the worst trades in NBA history. Davis averaged 20.2 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 0.9 steals and 1.8 blocks per contest with Dallas.
It will be fascinating to see if the Wizards sign Davis to an extension. Washington signed Trae Young to a four-year, $210 million extension in July, so you know Davis wants to get paid as well.
Washington drafted AJ Dybantsa with the first overall pick in this year’s draft and reunited with Khris Middleton in free agency. The Wizards, who haven’t made the playoffs since 2021, are expected to start Young, Kyshawn George, Dybantsa, Davis and Alex Sarr next season.
